017 FXUS65 KLKN 072214 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 214 PM PST Mon Dec 7 2020 .SYNOPSIS...Sunny and dry conditions continue through Tuesday. Mid and upper level cloud cover increases Wednesday due to a cold front that clips northern Nevada. Thursday and Friday turn cooler, and a chance of a few light snow showers exists in northern Nevada. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Thursday. The low pressure system from yesterday continues to move off of the southwestern coast of California, and allows for weak flow over our region. Temperatures stay on the warmer side with afternoon highs in the upper 40s through the mid 50s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight lows dip into the teens and low 20s. Skies stay mostly clear through Tuesday, but some mid- and upper- level clouds sneak in ahead of a dry cold front. This cold front clips northern Nevada on Wednesday. Getting any precipitation out of this cold front will be difficult, but there is some possibility for a few snowflakes to fall in the northern part of Elko county, particularly in the vicinity of Owyhee/Mountain City/Jarbidge. This cold front clears our region by Thursday, and temperatures cool down starting Thursday. Afternoon highs across the region dip closer to the climatological average with highs ranging from the mid 30s to mid 40s. .LONG TERM...Thursday night through next Monday. After the passage of a weak cold front on Thursday, a quick moving secondary shortwave embedded in northwest flow aloft will dip southeastward across the northeastern half of Nevada Thursday night into early Friday morning. This feature could touch off a few flurries mainly in the mountains of northern Elko County and will serve to usher in a brief shot of colder air for Friday. Weak shortwave energy and areas of moisture will impact mainly the northern half of the state Friday night into Saturday and again Sunday afternoon into next Monday as the upper flow gradually becomes more zonal. This will allow daytime temperatures to moderate a bit from the 30s to lower 40s on Friday back up into the 40s to lower 50s on Sunday while low temperatures creep upward from the single digits and teens on Friday into the lower 20s by Monday morning. Intermittent light snow showers could produce some light accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in the mountains of northern Humboldt and northern Elko counties while some of the higher valleys could receive trace amounts to less than an inch of snowfall. && .AVIATION...A weak ridge of high pressure accompanied by plenty of dry air will allow VFR conditions with clear skies and light winds to continue across northern and central Nevada through Tuesday with increasing high and mid clouds on Wednesday. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
