358 FXUS65 KBYZ 052049 AFDBYZ Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Billings MT 249 PM MDT Mon Oct 5 2020 .DISCUSSION... Tonight through Tuesday night... High pressure will be over the area through Tuesday with above normal temperatures continuing. Highs into the 80s with afternoon RH into the teens will combine with some westerly wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph for a few hours Tuesday afternoon, especially along the western foothills. Given that winds do not look widespread, have opted to not issue any fire weather highlites at this time, but will monitor guidance trends. A weak backdoor front will drop in from the northeast Tuesday night. Smoke from the Yogo fire in the Little Belt Mountains will affect portions of the area with northwest winds aloft continuing. Low temperatures in the 40s to lower 50s can be expected tonight and Tuesday night. STP Wednesday through Tuesday... First part of extended forecast seems cyclic with days with well above normal temperatures with dry and breezy afternoons followed by days where the winds lighten up and temperatures fall to 10 degrees above normal. Strongest amplitude ridging occurs on Wednesday followed by the ridge breaking down and flow aloft become zonal as weak pulses of energy flow through the area. By Saturday a more prominent pattern shift begins with a period of southwest flow aloft in advance of a trough which moves into the area on Sunday. This trough splits on Monday as it reaches the western Plains and another zonal flow regime arrive but temperatures look cooler next week. Important days look to be Thursday and Saturday where the winds and low humidity and temperatures pushing 80 will bring fire weather concerns. By Sunday much higher humidity and cooler temperatures will be accompanied by showers which may bring beneficial moisture but at this point it only looks like enough moisture to create a breather for fire resources. Winds will return next week but it will be cooler and not as dry. borsum && .AVIATION... In general, VFR will prevail across the area through the period. Smoke from the Yogo fire may restrict slantwise visibility from the Little Belts SE into KBIL, mainly this afternoon. Northwest winds, strongest over the east will decrease into the evening hours.
