Significant cool down underway for the weekend into next week as a cold front moves through the region. Gusty winds today with increased fire danger, blowing dust, and chances for rain and snow showers late Saturday into Sunday. Temperatures near freezing possible for many areas Sunday night with warmer temperatures returning by midweek. && .SHORT TERM... A few light showers and elevated thunderstorms remain over the Basin and Range this morning as a cutoff area of low pressure moved through southern California. Robust cold front currently in northern California will move through the region by Sunday morning with stronger winds today, much colder temperatures for the weekend and some rain/snow showers. Main change overnight was to issue a freeze watch for northeast California for Sunday night. Strong winds will continue today ahead of the cold front with gusts of 40-50 mph possible. Increasing moisture along the front will push the fire weather concerns farther east today, for more check the fire weather section below. Strong winds will also create travel/recreation hazards as well as areas of blowing dust. Rain and snow showers are expected along the cold front with snow levels dropping to around 5000 feet. Overall precipitation is expected to be relatively light, but an inch or two of snow will be possible along Sierra passes from about Carson Pass north Saturday night. Slushy accumulations could pose a hazard on roadways overnight, but any accumulation that does occur will melt quickly as the sun rises. Much colder temperatures are expected on Sunday behind the front with most areas in the region seeing overnight low temperatures dropping below 40 degrees Sunday night. Freezing temperatures should be expected through out the Sierra and will be possible in colder valleys of western Nevada. Temperatures will begin to rebound Monday with highs back into the mid to upper 60s in the valleys. -Zach .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next weekend... A flat ridge develops over CA/NV, slowly building through the end of the week as a trough develops off the California coast. Expect to see a warming and drying trend through the week with sunny skies and lighter winds Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will climb a few degrees each day, with highs topping in the mid- upper 80s across western Nevada on Wednesday and Thursday, 70s in the Sierra and northeast CA. By the end of the week, models are indicating another low pressure dropping into the West Coast which will bring another round of increasing winds to the region. We have increased chances for showers in northeast California and far northwestern Nevada by Friday- Saturday as the low pressure moves into northern California, along with cooler temperatures into next weekend behind the cold front. -Hoon && ...AVIATION... Gusty winds remain over the region this morning with Sierra ridges gusting up to 60kts. Some low level wind shear will be possible at terminals this morning. Mountain wave turbulence remains possible throughout the day, with gusty winds and blowing dust across West- Central Nevada by this afternoon. A few showers and thunderstorms continue over West- Central Nevada early this morning. As the low pressure moves over the region this weekend, additional showers and high elevation snow will the possible tonight and into Sunday, especially north of Highway 50. -Hoon && .FIRE WEATHER... Winds will further increase today, however this will also correspond with increasing humidity for most areas, including the Sierra and Sierra Front. The one exception will be through the Lahontan and West Humboldt Basins, where humidity values in the low teens are likely. Winds today will be stronger with gusts of 40-50 mph across the region. Therefore, Red Flag Warnings remain in effect for west central Nevada. Some nocturnal thunderstorms occurred over west-central Nevada last night and into early this morning, with dry lightning strikes possible. This will be a concern for today for hold-over fires in west-central Nevada, given the winds we are expecting today. Winds will be lighter, but still breezy, on Sunday. This will also correspond with much cooler conditions and increased relative humidity, mitigating fire concerns into next week. -Hoon && .REV Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
