West central Caldwell County in western North Carolina... Central Burke County in western North Carolina... * Until 1245 PM EDT Wednesday. * At 110 AM EDT, the USGS streamgauge for the Johns River at Corpening Bridge Rd. indicated the stream continues to rise in response to heavy rainfall that occurred across the upper Johns River watershed on Tuesday. Widespread 3-4 inches of rainfall occurred on Tuesday and excessive runoff has largely worked through smaller tributaries. However, the Johns River continues to rise as the floodwave works its way downstream from Collettsville to the Catawba River. Therefore a Flood Advisory has been issued for nuisance flooding adjacent to the Johns River. * Action/Advisory Stage flooding is defined as nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to a stream, including farmland, landscape nurseries, greenways, parks, and boat-access ramps. A few low-water crossings may be flooded as well. Caution is advised. * The following streamgauge has exceeded Action/Advisory Stage: Johns River below Corpening Bridge Rd, 6 N Morganton. Current Stage: 10.55 feet and rising steadily. Forecast: Johns River will continue to rise and crest between 11.5 and 12.0 feet later this morning. Action Stage: 8.5 feet. Minor Flood Stage: 12.0 feet. Impacts: At 12.0 feet, the Johns River boat access area at NC 18/ US 64 is flooded and low-lying areas adjacent to the river are flooding along Johns River Rd, Corpening Bridge Rd, and Playmore Beach Rd, including farmland and landscape nurseries. Low-water crossings along Old Johns River Rd near Collettsville may also be flooded. * Additional rainfall of 3-4 inches is expected later Wednesday across the entire upper Johns River watershed. This rainfall may cause a new round of flash flooding across northwestern Burke and Caldwell counties. This excessive runoff may result in more significant rises along the Johns River and additional Advisories and Warnings may be required. Persons are urged to stay weather aware. * Some locations that may continue to experience flooding include... Collettsville and the Chesterfield community. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Rapid rises on small creeks and streams is flooding low-water crossings and farmland.
