Areas of moderate drought /D1/ encompass much of the area near and to the south of the Interstate 10 and 12 corridors. Although the rains of April 28-29 have brought temporary relief to much of this area, the forecast for the next 14 days shows little, if any, precipitation for much of the area. High temperatures in the 80s and relatively dry air will allow for significant evaporative drying to return to the area. .Hydrologic conditions: While the Mississippi and Pearl River basins remain in flood due to upstream heavy rainfall, most other river basins are quickly returning to base flow after the April 28-29 rains. .SUMMARY OF IMPACTS: As dry weather returns and vegetation dries out, conditions will once again become more favorable for grassfires and wildfires. Any short term soil moisture gains provided over the last 12 days are likely to be eliminated over the next 2 weeks. Currently, no south Mississippi counties or southeast Louisiana parishes are under burn bans. .DROUGHT MITIGATION ACTIONS: None reported. .LOCAL DROUGHT OUTLOOK: Little or no precipitation is expected over the area in the next 7 to 14 days, but improved chances for precipitation are expected for mid-May. Temperatures are expected to average near or slightly above normal over the next month. .NEXT ISSUANCE DATE: This product will be updated Thursday May 7 or sooner if drought conditions change significantly. .RELATED WEB SITES: Additional information on current drought conditions may be found at the following web addresses: US Drought Monitor: https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu US Drought Information System: https://www.drought.gov NOAA Drought Page: https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/Drought Southeast Regional Climate Center...http://www.srcc.lsu.edu Louisiana State Climate Office...http://www.losc.lsu.edu Mississippi State Climate Office... http://geosciences.msstate.edu/stateclimatologist.htm Additional water and river information: NWS: https://water.weather.gov OWP: https://water.noaa.gov US Geological Survey (USGS): https://water.usgs.gov US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE): https://www.usace.army.mil .ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: The Drought Monitor is a multi-agency effort involving the National Weather Service and National Centers for Environmental Information...the USDA...state and regional center climatologists and the National Drought Mitigation Center.
