Northwestern Smyth County in southwestern Virginia... * Until 1030 AM EDT. * At 623 AM EDT, emergency management reported flooding in the western part of the county, especially in the Saltville area. Up to three inches fell across this area since midnight. Flash flooding is already occurring. Flooding is particularly severe in the Saltville area. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain and runoff from earlier heavy rainfall. SOURCE...Emergency management. IMPACT...Flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage and low lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flooding include... Saltville... Chilhowie... Quarry... Allison Gap... Broadford... and Adwolf. Excessive rainfall over the warned area will cause mud slides near steep terrain. The mud slide can consist of rock, mud, vegetation and other loose materials. This includes the following streams and drainages... Laurel Springs Creek, Beaver Creek, North Fork Holston River, Robertson Branch and Tattle Branch. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads.
