903 FXUS65 KBYZ 151015 AFDBYZ Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Billings MT 315 AM MST Wed Jan 15 2020 .DISCUSSION... Today through Thursday... After several days of light snow, today will generally dry. Some light snow has been falling overnight as another quick wave moves through. The back edge of this this system is already into central Montana and will continue to move east through the day. Some chance PoPs will linger in eastern Montana through much of the day, but any accumulations will be light. Temperatures across the western zones should start to recover today as with more sunshine and slowly rising heights, the arctic air will start to retreat to the east. Temperatures will still be below normal as highs today will be in the single digits and teens above zero, and Thursday will get into the 20s. Lows will still be in the single digits above and below. With the arctic air retreating out of the area today winds will be increasing along the foothills. The pressure gradient will not be especially strong, neither is the temperature difference. Winds gusts by this afternoon will be in the 30 to 40 mph range. Reimer Thursday Night through Tuesday... Models remain consistent in moving an upper trough across our region on Friday. This appears to be a pretty quick moving system which will tend to limit snowfall accumulations, but some areas may see one or two inches of snowfall with several inches possible in west facing slopes in the high country. We have continued to raise PoP's for Friday. The other change we have made is to drop highs Saturday across our east and somewhat across our central zones as cold air behind Fridays system looks to back door a little further west than earlier model runs suggested. That cold air gets pushed out for Sunday into next week as ridging takes over. Temps next week are expected to be near or a little above normal for the most part (highs in 30s common). Another Pacific system may affect our region around Tuesday with some light precipitation, but no significant snow storms are indicated for now. BT && .AVIATION... Areas of snow will move east of the area this morning, which will produce MVFR to IFR conditions east of KBIL to KSHR. Otherwise, expect dry weather with VFR conditions the rest of the period. Expect winds along the Beartooth/Absaroka foothills, including KLVM and K6S0 to be increasing today with gusts 30 to 35 knots. Reimer && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMP/POPS...
