211 FXUS63 KGID 092120 AFDGID AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Hastings NE 320 PM CST Thu Jan 9 2020 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday) Issued at 318 PM CST Thu Jan 9 2020 Mid level clouds are starting to move out of the forecast area this afternoon. Winds have turned to the northwest for much of the area behind a cold front moving through. As the clouds move out, the sun has been helping temperatures climb a few degrees. As evening comes on, the northwest winds and lack of cloud cover will allow temperatures to fall off. The colder air continues to push into the area during the night with lows in the teens to 20s by morning. Do not expect there to be a big warm up during the day on Friday and there could be some places that see falling temperatures during the afternoon. The northwest winds will continue to pick up and turn toward the north or northeast during the day. The temperatures are only part of the story for Friday. An upper level wave is expected to move into the area and bring a chance of snow. The better chance for snow will be during the afternoon hours, but snow could start during the morning hours in the southwest part of the area. The greatest snowfall will be during the afternoon and mostly across north central Kansas and far south central Nebraska. A few of the models have some indication there could be a band of snow set up in the southeast part of the forecast area, somewhere, but there is enough uncertainty in the band and location that will leave that for later to try to nail it down. Winds will increase during the afternoon and will gust to 25 to 35 mph or so. This could cause a little blowing snow, but mostly just drifting. .LONG TERM...(Friday night through Thursday) Issued at 318 PM CST Thu Jan 9 2020 The upper level wave starts to exit the area Friday night and the snow should come to an end from northwest to southeast during the night. Snowfall amounts will be less, with around an inch or less Friday night. The clouds will clear out behind the snow and with the cold advection, new snow, and decreasing winds, the temperatures across the area will drop into the single digits. That will be the first instance this week with wind chills dipping below zero. For Saturday through Thursday there will be mainly zonal flow with a few quick moving systems moving through the area. Saturday will continue cold with slightly warmer temperatures on Sunday, but there will be another system Sunday with a chance for some light snow Sunday. Temperatures will be a bit warmer on Monday, but another cold front will move through Monday night and cooler temperatures again Tuesday and Wednesday. Winds will be a little stronger Wednesday into Thursday and wind chills will drop to below zero for most locations. Along with the colder air, there will be a little light snow possible Tuesday night into Wednesday. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z KGRI/KEAR TAFS through 18Z Friday) Issued at 1118 AM CST Thu Jan 9 2020 Higher clouds will linger across the area today and tonight. Later tonight, behind the cold front there will be some lower clouds. Expect that KEAR will have more of the lower clouds than KGRI. && .GID WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... NE...NONE.
