062 FXUS65 KSLC 170440 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 940 PM MST Mon Dec 16 2019 .SYNOPSIS...High pressure will build across the state for the first half of the week. A mainly dry cold front will cross the state Thursday. High pressure will build back into the area for the early part of the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...A strongly amplified ridge is building into the western CONUS this evening while the last of the shortwave troughs from the latest storm cycle exits into Colorado. With large scale subsidence and clearing skies in the wake of the trough, expect a cold night across most areas tonight. Patchy fog will be possible overnight, mainly in some of the colder and more enclosed northern Utah valleys such as the Cache Valley, Bear River Valley, and portions of the Wasatch Back. Besides the cold and fog, the only other real weather worth mentioning would be localized gusty canyon winds in Washington County tonight given favorable northeasterly gradient and 700mb cold advection. However, these winds are not expected to be strong enough to cause enough concern to warrant any wind highlights. The high pressure settling into the area tomorrow will set up valley inversions. The inversions may weaken a bit late Wednesday owing to a weak and fast-moving trough. Although very little if any precipitation will accompany the trough, temperatures at 700mb are progged to lower to -10C. After that, high pressure will build back into the area leading to stable conditions and valley inversions through at least Friday. Updated the forecast for minor adjustments to Sky cover and to add mention of fog. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected to persist at the SLC terminal through the TAF period. Light north winds below 5 knots should become calm or light southeast by 06Z. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
