991 FXUS63 KLBF 170039 AFDLBF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 639 PM CST Mon Dec 16 2019 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday night) Issued at 229 PM CST Mon Dec 16 2019 Very little weather concerns for the next day across the region. Strong upper level ridging will continue across the western US while surface high pressure remains in place across the central US. Despite plenty of sunshine today and this afternoon, snowpack has remained in place as air temperatures remain below freezing for most locations. Leading into tonight, clear skies will persist allowing for ample radiational cooling to take place. Expect low temperatures to drop into the mid teens to upper single digits. One concern for tonight is the potential for fog development. Confidence is low in development at this time. Little melting has occurred today, limiting additional surface moisture into the atmosphere. Also winds will be slightly higher than the previous night with sustained westerly winds at 5 to 10 mph and gusts up to 12 to 20 mph. If fog were to develop, the best locations will be in the river valleys where winds may be more limited. Even then, confidence is not high. Will hold off mentioning any fog in the forecast at this time, but if observations change, this will need to be modified. .LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Monday) Issued at 229 PM CST Mon Dec 16 2019 Quiet conditions and dry weather will continue through the weekend as the strong upper level ridge persists across the western US. Strong surface high pressure will keep skies clear and precipitation out of the area through the end of the week and into next weekend. Plenty of warm air advection into the central Plains as a result of this high will allow for a significant warming trend to happen through the week. High temperatures will rise into the upper 40s to mid 50s by Saturday and Sunday. Overnight low temperatures will also gradually rise back into the mid 20s to low 30s by Sunday night. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Tuesday evening) Issued at 622 PM CST Mon Dec 16 2019 Latest satellite imagery and surface obs show a swath of middle clouds across far northern NE moving southeastward into the northern Sandhills. These are expected to diminish gradually by late tonight as they move southeastward. Otherwise, low aviation concerns with VFR conditions expected area-wide the next 24 hrs. West winds 5-10 kts tonight will increase to generally 10-15 kts tomorrow. && .LBF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... None. && $$ SHORT TERM...Kulik LONG TERM...Kulik AVIATION...ET
