Above-normal high temperatures are expected for most of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles today, with the exception of the northeast part of the forecast area. A backdoor cold front is expected to hold highs below 50 in the northeast, while the southwest Texas Panhandle is expected to rise into the lower-60s. Clouds expected to decrease in coverage this morning, with this afternoon and early evening remaining mostly clear. Clouds expected to increase again after midnight, especially in northern sections, as stronger cold surge arrives. No precipitation expected today or tonight. Cockrell && .LONG TERM...Sunday through Saturday A slow moving cold front will be located roughly west to east across the Texas Panhandle Sunday morning. The cold front will push through the remainder of the forecast area by 18Z to 20Z Sunday shifting the winds around to the north. Low cloudiness will advect into the Panhandles following the passage of the front generally holding temperatures in the 30s and 40s all day with some falling temperatures during the afternoon. High temperatures on Sunday, especially across the southern half of the Texas Panhandle, will depend on the timing of the cold front. Leaned closer to the colder NAM and ECMWF guidance rather than the warmer GFS guidance should the cold front push through quicker than forecast. Even the NBM went with 51 for Amarillo for Sunday so tried to stay within tolerance. Any precipitation on Sunday may start off as a light wintry mix of freezing drizzle and light snow Sunday morning across the northeastern portions of the forecast area and then a mix of light rain and light snow or light freezing rain and light snow Sunday afternoon. The precipitation should change over to all snow by 00Z Monday. Any accumulations of snow will be light ranging from a trace to less than half inch by 12Z Monday. Shortwave trough to push across the Panhandles Sunday night and Monday. Northwesterly upper flow prevails after the upper trough exits the forecast area. Cold and dry Monday as surface ridge builds down into the Panhandles. Upper ridge to build east across the Panhandles around the middle of next week. Gradually moderating temperatures Tuesday through Thursday before another upper trough approaches and ushers in a cold front by Thursday afternoon into Thursday evening.
