251 FXUS65 KMSO 270946 AFDMSO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Missoula MT 346 AM MDT Sun Oct 27 2019 .DISCUSSION...Cold northerly flow will persist over the Northern Rockies today. Temperatures will remain well below normal for this time of year as western Montana will be the 30s and north central Idaho being in the 40s. Shower activity will be fairly limited today with areas along the Continental Divide have the best chance of experiencing flurries. Another surge of even colder air is set to arrive along the Divide early Monday, then quickly spread south and westward reaching north-central Idaho and Lemhi County by evening. What to expect: * 1-3 inches of snow in western Montana/Lemhi County. Slippery roads are likely for the passes and higher valleys along the Divide but even the lower valleys of western Montana may see a period of snow covered roads. Refreeze is possible Monday evening for wet roads. * Gusty winds of 25-35 mph. Reduced visibility due to blowing snow possible. Also, choppy conditions for boaters on Flathead Lake. Snow will gradually diminish Monday night but a few showers will remain into Tuesday morning. Very cold temperatures will occur Monday through Thursday: * Wind chills: Monday evening will range from the single digits to -10F across the valleys of western Montana. * Overnight lows: Tuesday-Thursday mornings look to be below zero along the Divide, single digits for many valleys of western Montana with teens in the valleys of North-central Idaho. * High temperatures: Coldest on Tuesday with much of western Montana expected to remain in the 20s. Only a very slight improvement is expected Wednesday and Thursday. Trick-or-treaters will experience temperatures in the 20s and 30s, plan accordingly. A very gradual moderation in temperatures is expected for the end of the coming week into next weekend but temperatures will continue to be below seasonable levels. Occasional snow showers are also possible but significant impacts are not anticipated. && .AVIATION...Fairly clear skies has allowed for the development of patchy fog, especially across north central Idaho. This fog will dissipate throughout the morning. Northerly upper level flow persists over the Northern Rockies today with scattered mid level clouds passing over western Montana. Shower activity will be limited with the Continental Divide having the best chance of experiencing flurries throughout the day.
