525 FXUS65 KSLC 221547 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 947 AM MDT Thu Aug 22 2019 .SYNOPSIS...An upper level trough will move slowly east across the northern Rockies through Friday. The associated cold front will push south through northern Utah this morning, then settle into central Utah tonight. A dry northwest flow aloft will follow the exiting trough this weekend. && .DISCUSSION...The well-defined upper trough currently over western Idaho will continue on a slow eastward track across the northern Rockies through Friday. The MSAS data places the associated surface boundary across extreme northwest Utah this morning. This boundary will move south across northern Utah today, then stall over central Utah later tonight as the axis of the supporting upper trough shifts east through the northern Rockies. Radar imagery indicates only isolated light showers and/or virga near the frontal boundary across far northwest Utah late this morning. Weak low-level cold advection trailing the surface boundary with support from the mid-level trough will generate enough lift to maintain isolated convection through early afternoon. Mid-level warming beginning around mid-afternoon will gradually reduce mid-level lapse rates and likely bring an end to any remaining showers by around early evening. An increasingly dry and stable northwest flow will develop behind the exiting mid-level trough Friday. A low amplitude upper ridge nosing into the region from the eastern Pacific will maintain the dry/warm conditions across the Great Basin through the upcoming weekend. && .AVIATION...Expect south to southeasterly winds to continue at the SLC terminal, switching to the northwest between 18-20Z. Hazy conditions from a wildfire to the south should improve once winds switch to the northwest. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
