569 FXUS65 KSLC 031550 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 950 AM MDT Sat Aug 3 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A moisture surge will advance north into southern Utah today, then expand north and east across the remainder of the area by Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms could generate locally heavy rain through Monday. && .DISCUSSION...High pressure in place over the Four Corners area continues to pump moisture northward into southern Utah from Arizona and New Mexico. Morning showers and isolated thunderstorms in northern Arizona are drifting into southern Utah near Glen Canyon and Capitol Reef this morning, and should expand in coverage this afternoon. Temperatures are already warming nicely and should lend to another warm/hot summer day in store for most of the region. Precipitable water readings in place are near 1 inch in far southern Utah and are expected to increase northward and expand through Sunday. Steering flow remains quite low while instability looks to peak this afternoon and evening, as well as Sunday afternoon/evening. This all points to area convection with hazards of heavy rain and lightning. Any flooding potential will largely be of focus today for recreation areas down south including national parks. Edits to going forecast were to increase coverage in PoPs for far southern Utah, but overall the forecast is in good shape. Will pay close attention to coverage of convection for the next few afternoons. && .AVIATION...The SLC terminal will see VFR conditions throughout the TAF period. Light southeast winds are expected to shift to the northwest between 19Z and 21Z. && .FIRE WEATHER...(Issued at 525 am MDT)...Moisture will be increasing from the south, allowing for increased coverage of storms across southern Utah today. Some of the storms across the south may produce locally heavy rain. This moisture surge will continue through tomorrow, with storms spreading more into northern Utah and increasing the potential for wetting rain. After that, the moisture will decrease somewhat, but lingering moisture will continue to allow for some convection mainly over the mountains and eastern valleys. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
