808 FXUS65 KSLC 301622 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 1022 AM MDT Thu May 30 2019 .SYNOPSIS...The upper low moving slowly south through California will produce an increasingly warm southerly flow across Utah through early next week. Daily afternoon and early evening showers and thunderstorms will be possible over next several days. && .DISCUSSION...The upper low currently along the Oregon/California border will take a slow southerly track and finally settle into southern California Saturday night/Sunday. To the east of the upper low the southerly flow aloft will bring increasingly warm temps to the eastern Great Basin with somewhat drier air working into mainly southern and eastern Utah this weekend. Through Friday convection will largely remain diurnal with initiation over the higher terrain, followed by a drift into the valleys during the mid to late afternoon. A somewhat light mean layer flow aloft suggests slow-moving convection with the potential for brief, but isolated, heavy rain during the late afternoon through early evening. Drier air across the southern Rockies (PWAT values generally under 0.40") will spread across much of southern and eastern Utah by the weekend. Convection for those area will become more terrain-tied and isolated during peak heating hours. For the far west and north PWAT values will remain somewhat elevated (0.50" to 0.65") with the potential for organized convection resulting from good diurnal heating and dynamic support from any ejecting shortwaves out of the southern California upper low. No update planned for the short term forecast at this time. && .AVIATION...Conditions will remain favorable for afternoon showers and thunderstorms forming over the surrounding higher terrain. Main impact from these showers/storms will be gusty outflow winds during the late afternoon and early evening hours. Ceilings prior to the convective development will generally run at or above 12 kft through around 20z, then scattered to occasional broken cloud cover between 7 and 8 kft will follow through mid-evening. South winds will turn to the northwest around 20z, with gusty and erratic winds possible from the surrounding showers/thunderstorms. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
