869 FXUS65 KSLC 090458 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 957 PM MST Fri Mar 8 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A few lingering snow showers will continue tonight as a weak disturbance crosses the area. The next storm system will track east across the Desert Southwest early next week, bringing precipitation to mainly the southern and western portions of the state. && .DISCUSSION...The shortwave trough that brought the latest round of precipitation to the area is already exiting into Colorado and is being replaced by a weak shortwave ridge. However, this ridge will quickly shift east of the area by midnight as a second weak trough crosses the area overnight. Precipitation that was associated with the cold front has mostly wound down. That being said, areas of showers continue across portions of western/southwestern Utah ahead of the approaching second trough. These showers are expected to persist and shift east through late tonight before heights build early tomorrow morning as the trough departs the area. Additional snow accumulations are not expected to be significant, and as such, the Winter Weather Advisories have been expired or cancelled. The flow aloft will back more southwesterly tomorrow afternoon through Sunday with warm advection developing at 700mb. This warm advection is expected to result in snow showers (occasionally rain/snow mix in the valleys) across central and portions of northern Utah. This will occur in advance of the next storm system which will largely track across Arizona late Monday into Tuesday. Another storm system will then bring another potential for widespread snow on Wednesday. Updated the forecast mainly to trim PoPs and adjust sky cover for the rest of the night. && .AVIATION...The SLC terminal is expected to maintain primarily VFR conditions through much of the night with CIGS below 7kft. There is a 30 percent chance that periodic light snow showers after 07z will bring brief MVFR or possibly IFR conditions to the terminal at times through the night. Light northerly winds are expected to transition to southerly after 08-09z. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
