227 FXUS65 KSLC 281700 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 1000 AM MST Mon Jan 28 2019 .SYNOPSIS...A weak weather disturbance will continue southeast across eastern Utah today. A mostly dry and stable northwest flow aloft will follow through midweek with the next weather system bringing some shower activity to southwest Utah late in the week. && .DISCUSSION...The weak shortwave moving south-southeast across northeast Utah this morning will exit the forecast area by early this afternoon. Lift appears to be driven mostly by low-level cold advection, with little or no mid-level dynamic and thermal support for sustained deep lift. Add to this decreasing moisture and the result is rather limited areal coverage of what is light snow this morning. Significantly colder and still drier air across Wyoming will follow the exiting shortwave later this afternoon through tonight. The bulk of this cold air should remain east of the Wasatch range with very cold temps and minimal amounts of fog Tuesday morning. High pressure aloft will remain a dominant, albeit weakening, feature to the west of Utah through Wednesday. A stable and mostly dry northwest flow downstream from the high will remain across Utah through Wednesday night. An upper low attempting to work through the high pressure will reach the California coast by early Thursday, then track southeast to the Arizona/Mexico border by early Friday. This feature should remain sufficiently far removed from Utah such that any precip that does work into the state will remain confined to extreme southwest Utah during the day Thursday. && .AVIATION...Northerly winds in place at the KSLC terminal are expected to remain through the day before shifting to the south after 02z this evening. Scattered clouds will linger near the terminal and hug the terrain through the day, occasionally dipping below 7000 ft through 20z. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
