However clouds will be on the increase and the clouds will thicken as the day progresses. High temperatures for this saturday will range from the upper 20s over the northwest interior to the mid and upper 30s for Cape Cod and the Islands. A potent storm system over the lower Mississippi River Valley will head northeast and bring our region a wintry mix of precipitation beginning during this evening and lasting through most of Sunday. The precipitation will start out as snow, then change to a wintry mix Sunday morning, with rain along the south coast, before it all changes back to snow Sunday afternoon. Snowfall totals from this storm could range from a trace to a few inches across the south coast, to as much as 18 inches across northwest Massachusetts. Of equal concern with this major storm, is a period of freezing rain that is expected to fall over northeast Connecticut, northern Rhode Island and interior southeast Massachusetts. Additionally, plunging temperatures into the teens and low 20s late Sunday afternoon and evening will cause a flash freeze. As the storm departs Sunday night, arctic air will continue to spill across the region on blustery northwest winds. Temperatures by Monday morning will range from 5 below to 10 above zero. Blustery northwest winds will persist during the day Monday with temperatures only rising into the single digits and teens. Blustery and frigid conditions will continue Monday night. $$ AED
