Light lake effect snow continue to affect portions of the North Shore. A relatively quiet period is in store for most of the Northland through Sunday. Skies will remain mostly cloudy today through Sunday night and only light precipitation is expected. Tonight, high pressure will be over the region. Low level winds for most areas will veer to south to southwest by 12Z Sunday. Light lake effect snow showers will continue to affect the North Shore through much of the night, but little accumulation is expected. Low inversion heights, drier air, and marginal delta-T values will combine to keep any snowfall to a dusting to an inch. There has been reports of freezing drizzle east and south of Price County today, but we expect the bulk of that to remain out of northwest Wisconsin tonight. The clouds will keep minimum temperatures in the teens tonight. Highs Sunday will be in the mid twenties to around thirty on Sunday. A shortwave will pass through the region Sunday night bringing a chance for light precipitation to parts of northern Minnesota. Patchy freezing drizzle may accompany light snow chances Sunday night, roughly north of Highway 2 in Minnesota. .LONG TERM...(Sunday night through Saturday) Issued at 335 PM CST Sat Jan 12 2019 Relatively mild weather Monday and Tuesday will be followed by plummeting temperatures through the rest of the week. Waves of Arctic air will invade the region beginning Tuesday afternoon when a Canadian Clipper's cold front moves through the Northland. This Clipper will track from far northwest Ontario to Quebec Tuesday into Tuesday evening, and it might brush northern MN with light snow. This first round of Arctic air will be followed by much colder air when another cold front moves through Thursday into Thursday night. High temperatures will go from highs in the upper 20s and low 20s early in the week to the single digits below and above zero late this week. Very cold and hazardous wind chills of 25 to 35 below zero are likely Friday night into Saturday morning. The cold northwest to north wind flow over western Lake Superior will cause light lake effect snow downwind of Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin during the middle and latter half of the week. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Sunday afternoon) Issued at 1145 AM CST Sat Jan 12 2019 A mixture of MVFR and IFR conditions are seen at the terminals early this afternoon with little in the way of improvement expected through the period. Low stratus is expected to remain entrenched across the terminals through the period, KHIB and KDLH will see the best chances for IFR conditions through the night with MVFR conditions for the remainder of the terminals. MVFR visibilities are expected at KBRD starting around sunrise before improving to VFR by late morning. && .MARINE... There will be lingering hazardous waves for small craft along the Minnesota North Shore through this evening. The winds will become southerly overnight and southwest Sunday morning as low pressure approaches from the north. The southwest winds will become strong Sunday afternoon into Sunday night when the low pressure moves into the region.
