908 FXUS62 KCHS 110554 AFDCHS Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Charleston SC 1254 AM EST Fri Jan 11 2019 .SYNOPSIS... High pressure will prevail through Friday. Periods of unsettled weather are expected over the weekend as a low pressure system impacts the area. High pressure will gradually build over the region during the first half of the upcoming week. && .NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/... Early this morning: Clear skies and cold temperatures will prevail through sunrise. Most locations are already falling into the low to mid 30s, and upper 20s are still on track for inland areas. The going forecast required no changes through sunrise. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY/... Dry high pressure will persist on Friday, with sunny skies and cool temps in the upper 40s to lower 50s. A wedge of high pressure will develop to our north Friday night into Saturday as an upper trough approaches from the west. Sky cover will increase and we will eventually see light rain showers by Saturday afternoon due to increasing moist isentropic ascent. Occasional light to moderate rain will persist, especially over the northern half of the area, into Sunday as low pressure passes inland. However, the best forcing and moisture will remain north and west of the area through the weekend so total rainfall amounts will generally be less than 0.25". && .LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/... Surface low pressure off the Mid Atlantic Coast Sunday night will deepen and move away on Monday while an upper trough over the southeast states exits the region by late Tuesday. High pressure and somewhat milder air is anticipated by mid week after slightly below average temps early in the week. Moisture is limited Monday and Monday night as the upper trough approaches and only patchy light rains seem possible during this time. Otherwise, dry weather should prevail through the period. && .AVIATION /06Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... VFR conditions will prevail at both KCHS and KSAV through 06Z Saturday. Extended Aviation Outlook: Flight restrictions are possible on Saturday with lowering ceilings, but are more likely Saturday night into Sunday with scattered rain and low clouds. Low clouds may linger into Monday across the coastal corridor. && .MARINE... Tonight: High pressure will gradually build over the coastal waters through tonight with conditions remaining below Small Craft Advisory levels over all waters. In general, north winds will peak around 10-15 kt early as cold air advection diminishes and the pressure gradient becomes more relaxed. We could see a slight uptick in wind speeds after midnight tonight as the pressure gradient becomes slightly more pinched and sfc winds turn more north-northeast. In general, winds could gust as high as 20 kt, strongest over northern South Carolina and waters and offshore Georgia waters. Seas should range between 2-4 ft. A high pressure wedge pattern will setup Friday and linger into Saturday, producing prevailing northeast winds and a somewhat tighter gradient. Winds/seas expected to remain below advisory thresholds. A warm front will lift north Saturday night or Sunday, briefly switching winds to southerly before a cold front sweeps through. During early to mid week, winds will shift north as low pressure to the northeast pulls away. There will be some decent surge potential Monday into Monday night with a potential for some SCA conditions on GA waters beyond 20 NM. && .CHS WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... GA...None. SC...None.
