289 FXUS65 KVEF 212038 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 140 PM PDT Fri Sep 21 2018 .SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions will prevail into early next week as a southwest flow keeps moisture east of the area. Temperatures will remain several degrees above normal through the middle of next week. && .SHORT TERM...through Sunday night. Flat ridge over the area has allowed some limited 700mb moisture to remain over the higher terrain of southern Nevada, southern Mohave, and eastern San Bernardino Counties where a few flat cumulus have developed this afternoon. Nearly the same conditions are expected again Saturday before a trough off the west coast helps bring in more of a southwest flow and brings drier air into the area. Some afternoon breezes will be seen over the northern portions of the forecast area Saturday afternoon. Breezy winds are expected to be more widespread Sunday with most areas seeing winds in the 10-25 mph range. At this time it looks like winds will remain below any Red Flag or Wind Advisory criteria. Temperatures will remain several degrees above normal into next week. .LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday. The long term weather looks to remain dry and warm. On Monday and Tuesday, we will be on the backside of a long wave trough located over much of the central U.S. A weak impulse will push southward along the western extent of this trough across southern Nevada and southern California during the same time frame resulting in a weak push of northerly winds over the southern Great Basin Monday night into Tuesday morning. A weak ridge builds in Wednesday and Thursday as a closed low strengthens off the northern California coast. No significant winds or changes in temperature are expected in the long term period through Thursday. Daily max temps remain around 5 degrees above normal for the first few days of astronomical fall. && .AVIATION...For McCarran...Light easterly winds expected the remainder of the afternoon before winds turn more southwest after sunset. Speeds overnight expected to be around 7 kts. Winds will once again become easterly after 18z Saturday with speeds around 6-7 kts.
