A system moving through the area has drastically increased cloud cover, leaving overcast conditions for most Iowa today. High temperatures reached the mid to upper 30s. Winds have been easterly at 15 to 20 miles per hour. Rain showers have been slowly moving northward across Iowa. A few locations have reported thunder with these showers. By early evening, radar indicated a line of rain showers from Fort Dodge southeast across the Des Moines metro and into Ottumwa. There have been several reports of ice pellets and sleet mixed in with this rain. Temperatures around 530 PM were in the mid 30s across Iowa. Conditions across the Great Plains have been mostly cloudy as this system continues to develop. Wintry precipitation has been reported across northern Nebraska, with rain showers in Missouri. This system has resulted in a drastic temperature contrast across the region, with mid to upper 60s in portions of Kansas and Missouri, to mid 30s across Nebraska and Iowa. For the rest of this evening, wintry mixed precipitation will continue throughout most of the state. Temperatures overnight will hover right around the freezing benchmark of 32 degrees. For portions of northern and eastern Iowa, travel conditions will become slick overnight and into Saturday morning. After this system passes, Iowa will see a brief dry period, and temperatures will slowly recover back into the 40s. However, the weather pattern becomes active at the start of the next work week, with a few systems forecast to move across the area that will bring several rain showers. $$
