An expansive area of low cloud cover and some fog dropped south into the state, making it as far south as Storm Lake to Ames to Mount Pleasant by late morning. This cloud cover is expected to slowly dissipate and retreat through the day. Temperatures will be cool through the afternoon with highs only in the upper 30s and 40s. Mild but dreary conditions are expected tomorrow as southerly winds bring warm, moist area northward into the Upper Midwest. Cloudy skies and areas of drizzle are expected through much of the day with highs ranging from the mid 40s in northeast Iowa to near 60 in the southwest. A strong cold front will pass through the state Friday evening into Friday night. Gusty northwest winds behind the front will usher in cooler air which will hang around through the weekend. Rain, possibly mixed with snow, is possible Friday night into Saturday morning. The forecast then dries out through much of next week. A quick warm up back into the 50s is possible Monday, but then highs return back to the 30s and 40s through the middle of next week. $$
