Increasingly hot and dry weather will prevail across the Great Basin by midweek. Many lower valleys will see temperatures climb into the 90s on Wednesday afternoon. A strong cold front will bring a good chance of showers and thunderstorms to the northern third of Nevada Thursday evening into Friday. An upper-level low pressure system will provide a chance of additional showers and storms Saturday and Sunday along with much cooler temperatures and the possibility of frost and freezing temperatures later in the weekend. && .SHORT TERM... This Monday evening through Wednesday evening. Expect increasingly hot and dry weather through midweek. Daytime temperatures will warm back up into the mid 80s to lower 90s on Tuesday, and lower to mid 90s in the lower valleys on Wednesday which will be the warmest day of the foreseeable future. Dry, southerly low- level flow will increase a little each day and become stronger and more gusty each afternoon especially toward the end of the week as a strong cold front approaches the region. Nighttime lows will generally be in the 40s to lower 50s tonight and Tuesday night. .LONG TERM...Wednesday night through next Monday. One last day of much above normal temps on Thursday before a strong cold front sweeps across the region on Friday bringing much cooler temps, showers and thunderstorms, and windy conditions. Showers and thunderstorms will mostly be confined to areas north of highway 50. After highs in the 80s to lower 90s on Thursday temps will cool into the 60s to lower 70s over the weekend. Some cloud build ups around KELY will produce isolated virga with downdraft winds until 02Z. && .FIRE WEATHER... Expect increasingly hot and dry weather through midweek. Daytime temperatures will warm into the mid 80s to lower 90s on Tuesday, and lower to mid 90s on Wednesday. Minimum RHs will generally range from 10% to just under 20% in the northern Nevada fire zones and 5% to 10% in the central zones. South winds will pick up a bit on Tuesday afternoon and gust between 15-25 mph mainly across portions of southern Lander, Eureka, White Pine and northern Nye counties. A similiar, though slightly stronger wind regime will exist for Wednesday afternoon with south winds gusting 20-30 mph. The combination of higher temperatures, low RHs, and dry winds will help to accelerate the curing of fire fuels throughout much of the region over the next few days. && .HYDROLOGY... The Jarbidge River continues to run high and is expected to remain just below minor flood stage through mid-week. The Humboldt River at Palisade is running high again but is expected to remain below flood stage. The Humboldt River at Battle Mountain continues to run high and is rising. The river could reach flood stage by mid week. The lower Humboldt River from Comus downstream through Winnemucca to the Humboldt/Pershing County border is back in minor flood stage and will slowly rise through the week.
