046 FXUS66 KSTO 151707 AFDSTO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1007 AM PDT WED JUN 15 2016 .SYNOPSIS... Low pressure will result in unseasonably cool and unsettled weather across the region through the end of the week. Showers, thunderstorms, and high elevation snow will be possible. Temperatures will begin to warm up Friday and over the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... Forecast for today looks on track as a trough moves in from the north. Currently, some mid level clouds and virga over our area. Still looks as though there will be enough instability combined with a short wave moving through to initiate some heavier showers and thunderstorms over the northern valley/mountains this afternoon. && .PREVIOUS DISCUSSION... Cool and unsettled weather will dominate NorCal's weather the next several days as the trough deepens. Temperatures will be well- below average for mid-June, and quite a bit of shower and some thunderstorm activity is expected. The best chance for more widespread shower activity will occur later tonight and Thursday as a stronger wave pivots through the region. The higher elevations around the Lassen Park area may see some significant accumulating snowfall, otherwise the main impacts from the system will be cold and breezy weather. Moderating temperatures are expected heading into the weekend as the main part of the trough lifts up into the northern Rockies. && .EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Sunday THROUGH Wednesday) High pressure over the southwestern U.S. Will keep the forecast area dry through the extended period. As the upper High center retrogrades westward...temperatures will warm. Daytime highs will start out just above normal on Sunday then climb to 10 to 15 degrees above normal by mid week. Significantly strong winds are not expected but may become locally breezy at times as weak disturbances pivot through upper level southwest flow. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions next 24 hours except possible MVFR/IFR conditions in showers or thunderstorms northern mountains and northern Sacramento valley this afternoon and evening. Breezy southerly winds with gusts to 30 mph through the delta and over Sierra Cascades. && .STO Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
