478 FXUS66 KOTX 031757 AFDOTX AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SPOKANE WA 1055 AM PDT Sat Aug 3 2013 .SYNOPSIS... Unsettled weather will continue today with rain showers and the possibility of a few thunderstorms before tapering off in the evening hours. Summer-like weather will return next week with a warm up back to normal and eventually above normal temperatures by the middle of the week. A small chance of mainly mountain thunderstorms will be present almost each day throughout the week. && .DISCUSSION... We continue to be under a stretched out deformation band of clouds from Portland to Kalispell. This band is producing occasional areas of light rain showers. This morning's showers are fading at the moment over the Basin and Palouse. A new area of showers is developing over NW Montana and will move into the northern Panhandle later this morning. All of this cloudiness will inhibit warming today so the threat of thunderstorms is very small. This is not the case over the Cascades and Okanogan Highlands where sunshine will allow the mountains to warm quickly. This coupled with the abundant moisture in place will rapidly destabilize the atmosphere leading to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Not anticipating the need for any kind of flash flood watch but will continue to monitor. For the past 2 days we've had isolated thunderstorms put down copious rainfall and today could be the same. Other change to the forecast was to cool afternoon temperatures a few degrees. This may need to be revised further based on the cloud cover. RJ && .AVIATION... 18Z TAFS...A very moist atmosphere remains in place over the area today. Mountain showers and thunderstorms will develop over the Cascades and northern Mountains. None of this activity is expected at the TAF sites. VFR weather is expected with a BKN cloud layer today and this evening. There is a slim chance of some fog formation tonight, but this was left out of the TAFs for now. RJ && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
