The weather forecast models have been teasing a significant snowfall for Iowa, but change their mind after sequential runs in time. The featured chart presents Global Forecast System (GFS) model forecasted precipitation for a grid point near Des Moines. The model is run every six hours producing a forecast out for the next two weeks or so. Model runs up until January 30th had this weekend being dry. Subsequent model runs then dumped heavy amounts of rain or snow or some mixture for Des Moines. Two model runs yesterday had Des Moines missing almost all precipitation. The most recent run (top row) now has rain today and snow on Saturday. Model inconsistencies like this make life fun and the folks that forecast the weather for a living lose hair or grey quickly. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 03 Feb 2012 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 11 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 1 Svr Tstorm 38 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 1 Fl Flood 15 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 47 Verified: 24 [51.1 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [71.0 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [17.2 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [26.6 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1175 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.94] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.49] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.50] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One of the handy applications on the weather bureau's website is the Observed Weather History app that simply lists out observations for the past three days. So I have basically ripped this off, but added some more functionality:

  • You can go back in time, instead of just viewing the past three days
  • You can optionally view the raw METAR reports
  • The raw present weather codes are used instead of translated summary text

The app works for all of the sites in the ASOS/AWOS networks worldwide. If you see any issues or have ideas for further enhancement, please let me know. > Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2012-02-08 | Title : Minimal Winter | Date : 08 Feb 05:54 AM | Votes : Good: 14 Bad: 3 +---------------------------------------------- The featured chart is another illustration of how warm this winter has been. The featured chart is another metric showing how few winter weather headlines have been issued by the National Weather Service so far this winter as compared with the past six years. The value shown represents the average number of winter weather advisories and warnings per county in Iowa. The IEM VTEC Browser is an application that allows you to quickly browse through NWS issued watch, warnings, and advisories. The products available are those with Valid Time Event Code codes within the NWS issued product. VTEC is a very nice way to programically keep track of warnings.

The updates to the VTEC browser include:

  • Minified the javascript so to improve download times and responsiveness.
  • The Google Map portion is now done with OpenLayers so to avoid various issues people hit with using the Google Map API.
  • The RADAR presentation was completely redone with the option to plot local / individual RADAR sites instead of the composite product. This was done utilizing the recently announced IEM RIDGE web service.
  • The RADAR information is now included in the permalink, so you can share the URL with others and get the desired RADAR plot.

There are probably some new and glorious bugs, so please let me know if you find one! Individual RADAR data is available for Iowa sites back to 1995 and for the entire country back to only 23 Jan 2012! Back filling the archive will be a slow work in progress. The hope is to initially do the high end tornado outbreak and hurricane days. If you have a needed date, please email me and I can see about getting that date done sooner than later. > Daily Feature No feature posted > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 18 Feb 2012 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 23 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 5 Svr Tstorm 55 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 1 Fl Flood 19 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 78 Verified: 36 [46.2 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [63.9 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [2.6 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [15.3 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [2306 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.91] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.54] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.44] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The quality controlled Iowa COOP data for May 2011 has been uploaded to the IEM. These observations are kindly provided by Harry Hillaker, our state climatologist, who passes along these notes on the month:

May 2011 temperatures averaged 59.1 degrees or 1.0 degrees below normal while precipitation totaled 5.00 inches or 0.44 inch above normal. This ranks as the 52nd coolest and 36th wettest May among 139 years of record. The most noteworthy events in the month were some unusual temperature extremes. Spencer and Sibley reported lows of 20 degrees on the morning of May 3. A lower May temperature has been reported in Iowa only four times in the past 100 years. Just a week later all but six of 133 Iowa reporting points reached or exceeded 90 degrees with Jefferson soaring to 100 degrees. This was Iowa's earliest triple digit reading since April 22, 1980 and the first 100 seen any time in May since 2001. The spring season (March-April-May) averaged 47.0 degrees or 1.3 degrees below normal while precipitation totaled 10.42 inches or 0.20 inch more than normal. This ranks as the 50th coolest and 41st wettest spring among 139 years of records.

The following is the number of new daily records set at COOP sites based on data back to 1951.
