The quality controlled Iowa COOP data for August 2010 has been uploaded to the IEM. These observations are kindly provided by Harry Hillaker, our state climatologist, who passes along these notes on the month:

August temperatures averaged 74.7 degrees or 3.4 degrees above normal while precipitation totaled 4.80 inches or 0.61 inch above normal. This ranks as the 17th warmest and 31st wettest August among 138 years of records. The last warmer August came in 1995. The warmth came without extreme heat with 97 degrees being the statewide maximum temperature with a few northeast Iowa localities not reaching 90 degrees during the month. Rainfall was highly variable with only 1.03 inches at Guttenberg (6th driest August among 80 years of records) to 15.55 inches at the Ames Airport. Record maximum August rain totals were set at Ankeny and Ottumwa. The three summer months of 2010 averaged 73.5 degrees or 1.9 degrees above normal while precipitation totaled 23.30 inches or 10.22 inches above normal. This ranked as the 26th warmest and 2nd wettest summer among 138 years of records. The last warmer summer was in 2002 and only 1993 brought more rain (26.83 inches).

The following is the number of new daily records set at COOP sites based on data back to 1951.

I have created a page that allows you to search the IEM's archive of NWS watch, warning, and advisories by county or zone. I routinely get questions like:

  • How many tornado warnings does Polk County get per year?
  • How often do high wind warnings get issued for such-and-such Zone?

This application should answer those questions. You can export the presented table to excel for further analysis if you wish. > Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2011-05-18 | Title : Better curves on sunny days | Date : 18 May 05:57 AM | Votes : Good: 17 Bad: 9 +---------------------------------------------- The featured chart is a timeseries from the Cantril RWIS site showing air, pavement, and sub surface temperatures since last Thursday. The impact of having sunny days on temperatures can clearly be seen with the textbook delayed response as you go deeper into the ground. The upgraded equipment will support an upcoming roll out of 10 gigabit network. This was thanks to a very large storm system that shows up on visible satellite this morning centered over Kansas. More severe weather is expected today, but Iowa will miss out on most of it with the primary impact being continued heavy rains. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 25 May 2011 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 289 0 | 0 2 0 0 0 | 12 Svr Tstorm 409 0 | 0 5 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 45 2 | 0 5 3 1 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 704 Verified: 253 [35.9 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [60.8 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [25.9 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [18.6 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1925 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.85] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.64] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.34] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The quality controlled Iowa COOP data for September 2010 has been uploaded to the IEM. These observations are kindly provided by Harry Hillaker, our state climatologist, who passes along these notes on the month:

September 2010 temperatures averaged 63.1 degrees or 0.2 degrees above normal while precipitation totaled 5.56 inches or 2.15 inches above normal.???? This ranks as the 60th coolest and 19th wettest September among 138 years of records.???? This was also the coolest September since 2006 and wettest since 1986.

The following is the number of new daily records set at COOP sites based on data back to 1951.
