Thanks to a powerful push of warm and moist air on Thursday,
temperatures soared and topped out at 61 degrees for Des Moines, which
is two degrees short of a record.  This high temperature was more than
two standard deviations warmer than the average high (two sigma).  The
featured chart presents the combination of two sigma days against the
average high and low temperature for December.  The green symbols and
lines are the values for 2010.  The symbols are offset slightly for
readability.  The chart shows what one may intuitively expect, that
cold months have a number of very cold days and vice versa.  This year
shows up as a somewhat rare combination of having a below average
month along with an above two sigma warm day (yesterday).

Temperatures soared last Thursday (30 Dec) pushing 60 degrees for Des
Moines.  Not all Iowans were as lucky with those in north-eastern Iowa
only in the mid 40s.  The primary reason was the deep snow pack that
existed prior to the strong push of warm air into the state.  The
featured chart presents an analysis of high temperature versus the
snow depth present that morning.  The relationship is clear!  A common
forecasting rule says the high can only reach 43 with 4+ inches of
snow on the ground, the push of warm air was exceptionally strong
which is why this rule didn't quite hold.

precipitation and average temperature for Ames and the areal averaged
value for the state as unofficially computed by the IEM.  The year was
very wet and slightly cooler than average.  October ended up being dry
and warm, which was a huge help to get the crops harvested.

Based on some preliminary data and IEM estimates, 2010 will go down as
the four year in a row wetter than a recent trend of 30 years of Iowa
data.  The featured chart presents the yearly areal averaged
precipitation along with a trailing 30 year moving average.  The flood
year of 1993 and drought year of 1988 stick out in this chart. The
trend line has increased in this chart by roughly 4 inches in the past
50 years (~12%).

<p><a href="http://www.wbuf.noaa.gov/bufkit/bufkit.html">Bufkit</a> is
a model forecast vertical profile analysis and visualization tool. 
The IEM maintains an <a
href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/archive/schema.php">archive</a>
of "bufkit profiles", but only for locations near Iowa.  Local ISU
grad student, Chris Karstens, maintains a <a
href="http://www.meteor.iastate.edu/~ckarsten/bufkit/bufkit.html">larger
collection</a> of these profiles and has the following announcement.

<p>Bufkit profiles are being generated for 891 sites in/near the
contiguous U.S. for the NAM (every 6 hours), the GFS (every 6 hours),
and the RUC (every hour) models, and the data is available within a
few hours after model initialization.  These data are being
post-processed in real time using the Cobb method for predicting snow
amounts and precipitation type.

<p>Additionally, SREF bufkit profiles are available every 6 hours for
sites in/near Iowa (please contact me if you wish to have a site
added).  All bufkit data are being archived and are available for
download at the <a href="http://mtarchive.geol.iastate.edu/">MT
Archive</a> site.  This archive began shortly before the
new year (2011).  A selection of real-time data are available at
<a href="http://metfs1.agron.iastate.edu/data/">here</a> and

Yesterday's feature presented the last four years as being wetter than
average statewide.  The featured map compares these four years
(2007-2010) against the 30 years previous to that.  Please note that
the units of this chart are inches per year, so a good portion of the
state is shown with values in the 10-15 inches range.  This means that
the past four years have averaged 10-15 inches more per year than the
average of the previous 30 years.  Some portions of the state have not
been as relatively wet and even a deficit appears in far northwestern
Iowa.

The featured chart presents the average temperature departure from
average after a day that has either a high temperature two standard
deviations (two sigma) warmer than average or a low temperature two
sigma colder than average.  You could think of this plot as examining
how persistent really warm or cold days are.  The plot is divided up
by seasons showing how warm temperatures in the summer time tend to
stick around longer than in the other seasons.  Warm weather in the
winter time is not as fleeting as one might have expected.  Cold
weather tends to stick around slightly more in the winter time than
other seasons.  Very cold air is set to arrive this weekend and stick
around for most of next week.

It has been a couple weeks since our last snow storm and our last
winter storm brought very warm temperatures that melted much of the
snowpack over Iowa.  While this winter storm did not drop heavy
amounts of snow as shown by the featured analysis, strong winds on
Friday were able to blow this snow around and create blizzard
conditions over northern Iowa.  Cold air is flowing into Iowa this
Saturday morning and is expected to stick around for the remainder of
the week.

<p>The IEM level II NEXRAD data feed is running very slow this fine
Sunday evening thanks to the large winter storm over the deep south. 
I'm trying to optimize things and create some workarounds.  Your
patience is appreciated.<p><b>Update 8 PM:</b> I migrated the level II workload to a faster system and appear to be keeping up now.  The previous system also generates level III composites, so that was flakey this evening as well.  I will be able to recover those images to make the archive whole.

The high temperature on Sunday in Barrow, Alaska was a balmy 35
degrees whereas Des Moines, Iowa struggled in the 20s.  The featured
chart presents the daily frequency of occurrence for having Barrow
with a warmer high temperature than Des Moines.  Given that the chart
presents 60 years of data, the chances are still rather slim for
having such an occurrence.  There have been 251 occurrences overall,
so this happens about 4 times per year.  The bottom chart presents the
actual difference in high temperature on days that Barrow was warmer.
 The two lone events in September occurred back in 1995 (21 and 22).
Temperatures on Monday will come close to accomplishing this rather
rare feat with highs in both locations in the low 20s.

Snowfall is winding down this Tuesday morning after a prolonged period
of snowfall since Sunday brought upwards of a foot near Sioux City. 
Winds are expected to increase this afternoon which should have little
trouble blowing the somewhat fluffy snow around.   The next chance of
snow arrives late this week and plenty of very cold air will be around
to remind us that this is typically the coldest week of the year.

<p>The quality controlled Iowa COOP data for April 2010 has been
uploaded to the IEM. These observations are kindly provided by Harry
Hillaker, our state climatologist, who passes along these notes on the
month:

We had a statewide average temperature of 54.9 degrees or 
6.4 degrees above normal.   This ranks as the sixth warmest April
among 138 years of records and warmest April since 1981.  
Precipitation averaged 3.74 inches or 0.41 inches above normal to rank
as the 32nd wettest April among 138 years of records.   The statewide
average snowfall was only a trace.   This was the
28th April in the past 120 years with only a trace for a statewide
average. However, only 3% of the state's reporting points recorded
snow during the month which is the lowest percentage seen in April
since at least 1890.

A bitter north west wind is blowing this morning and with temperatures
in the single digits, wind chills are well into the negative range. 
The featured chart presents the number of hours per winter season that
wind chills values below -20F were reported at the Des Moines and
Sioux Falls airport.  During every year, except one, Sioux Falls has
had more hours below -20 than Des Moines.  The chart does show that
these bitter cold temperatures have been less common in the past ten
years than the previous 30.  The brutal winters of 1977 and 1978 show
up prominently on the chart.

Temperatures are a bit balmy this Monday morning thanks to a passing
storm system dumping a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.
Highs today should approach just above freezing!  A cold front will
sweep the state later today and plunge our temperatures back into the
deep freeze as shown by the featured chart of observed Ames
temperatures along with the GFS model forecast.  Highs will struggle
to break single digits for the rest of the week.

The latest snow storm for Iowa is in the books and the featured
analysis shows the heaviest snowfall totals occurring in northeast
Iowa with amounts approaching 6 inches.  The storm system did bring a
surge of warmer air into the state allowing for a brief period above
freezing Monday afternoon.  That warm air is now gone and has been
replaced by a bitterly cold air mass.  High temperatures will struggle
this week to exceed the single digits.

The average temperature so far this month is about 5 degrees below
normal for Ames with each day having snow cover so far.  The featured
chart presents the relationship between observed average temperature
departure and number of days with snow cover for January.  While the
linear fit is not perfect, the relationship is fairly clear. The
preliminary value so far for 2011 is shown by the plus symbol.  The
chart shows the coldest five months all having snow cover for 30 or 31
days.

Very cold temperatures and a bit of wind have conspired over night to
bring bitterly cold wind chills to Iowa this Friday.  The featured
chart presents the reported wind chill against the air temperature
during hours which the wind speed was measurable.  Histograms of each
are presented at the side and top.  -20??F is roughly an observed
threshold of wind chill where frequencies start declining at colder
temperatures.  Of course, the most extreme values are even more rare
and often do not happen every year.

<p>The IEM web farm experienced service outages between about 3-6 PM
on Monday, 24 January.  This was due to a failed server capacity
upgrade that caused load to back up to overwhelmed servers.  I'm in
the process of bring more horsepower on-line now and hope to have it
going very soon.  More updates later.

Another snow storm this winter is in the books with the lucky folks in
far southwestern Iowa picking up the heaviest totals.  There was
another storm last Friday that brought an inch or two to central Iowa.
 The forecast for this week looks rather dry for a change with
temperatures actually warming a bit before crashing again next weekend.

Some lucky parts of Iowa got to experience at or above freezing
temperatures on Monday!  For Des Moines, the experience was brief for
only a few moments in the mid afternoon.  The featured chart presents
the number of hours at or above freezing for January measured by the
Des Moines ASOS.  The total number of hours so far this January is one
of the smallest since the epic winters during the late 1970s.  January
2006 sticks out with the number of hours totalling around 20 days
worth of time!  The bottom chart presents the hourly frequency of
having at or above freezing temperatures.  The largest percentages are
in mid-afternoon at just under 40%.

The featured map presents the lowest temperature reported so far this
winter by the automated weather sensors located at airports in the
state. According to this analysis, the entire state has seen
temperatures below zero.  The coldest temperature was -23 reported by
Monticello back on the 21st.  Sub-zero temperatures are expected to
return next week.

According to IEM estimates, the warmest temperature recorded so far in
Iowa this month was a mere 44 degrees. This makes for one of the
lowest values on record only behind 1979 and 1940. Last year was not
much better, with just one degree warmer value of 45.  The forecast
for the next few days does hold some promise that we may be able to
improve on the warmest value with highs hopefully above freezing for most.

The temperature finally broke freezing on Thursday ending a modest
streak of 9 days below.  Earlier in January, we had a streak of 11
days which is the longest such streak this winter season.  The
featured chart presents the longest consecutive day streak below
freezing for each winter since 1893.  As with other charts recently
featured, the winters of 77 and 78 stand out.  The bottom chart shows
the period during which the streaks of various lengths occurred. 
There is an interesting streak of 30 days that lasted from late
February to mid March (1960).  There is certainly plenty more time for
cold weather this winter!
