The featured chart presents a summary of reported sky conditions at 6 AM each morning this year. While these sites are only separated by 30 some miles, there are some large differences in the number of clear mornings reported. The difference here is that the Des Moines sensor has augmentors that report cloud ceilings higher (to 25,000 feet) in the sky than the Ames sensor can (to 12,000 feet). This is just one of the data quirks that keeps life fun and various people employed to keep track of this all! > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 30 Nov 2011 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report No Warnings Issued -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Having this large of a daily warm up is somewhat rare for this time of year as shown by the featured chart. The chart presents the frequency of 20+, 30+, and 35+ degree differences between the daily low and high temperature. The spring and fall seasons show up clearly in this chart along with a general annual signal of the 20 degree line. The dip in frequencies for the largest differences in the summer is due to shorter nighttime periods (less time to cool off) and abundance of water vapor to help moderate any temperature moves. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 01 Dec 2011 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report No Warnings Issued -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The chart shows conditions recently getting both better and worse (two arrows) with the total area under drought shrinking while the area in severe drought condition expanding. This implies that recent precipitation events have missed the hardest hit areas. These areas are in northwest and northcentral Iowa. The near term forecast does not have much hope for large precipitation events. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 16 Dec 2011 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report No Warnings Issued -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've made some improvements to the application that lists out National Weather Service issued text products. The primary improvement is that the application presents products by issuing center rather than a hack using the AFOS product identifier (long story). Another big improvement is that the app runs much faster. I also added to the listing of issuing centers various river forecast centers and other non-weather forecast offices.

This change makes the app much more useful as you can now truly see most all products issued by a given center within the NWS. This application archives about 25,000 products per day and has data available back to 1 Jan 2009. > Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2011-12-20 | Title : Before and after Christmas | Date : 20 Dec 05:56 AM | Votes : Good: 26 Bad: 3 +---------------------------------------------- The featured chart presents a comparison between the accumulated snowfall prior to and after Christmas. Only a handful of winters have seen less snowfall after Christmas than before. Currently, a large winter storm is just to our southwest, but struggling to bring snow into Iowa. Mapserver is an open source GIS application supporting web mapping. The IEM has been using it for quite a long time and it produces many of the plots you see on the website. I upgraded it to version 6.0.1 today, which is a non-trivial update due to changes in its configuration file structure and API changes to PHP. I am sure I have introduced some bugs to the website, so please let me know if you see any trouble. > Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2011-12-22 | Title : Annual cycles | Date : 22 Dec 05:57 AM | Votes : Good: 24 Bad: 5 +---------------------------------------------- The day with the least amount of daylight is also the start of the winter season. The quality controlled Iowa COOP data for March 2011 has been uploaded to the IEM. These observations are kindly provided by Harry Hillaker, our state climatologist, who passes along these notes on the month:

March temperatures averaged 34.6 degrees or 1.3 degrees below normal while precipitation totaled 1.53 inches or 0.62 inch less than normal. This ranks as the 67th warmest and 55th driest March among 139 years of records. Snowfall averaged 3.3 inches or 1.4 inches less than normal to rank as the 41st least snowy March among 124 years of records.

The following is the number of new daily records set at COOP sites based on data back to 1951.
