According to IEM data, this sets a record for consecutive days below 60 in May. The featured chart displays the monthly records for Ames and the most recent year the record was set or tied. During the winter months, a large number of years had the entire month below 60. It is interesting to see that July never has had a high temperature below 60 for Ames since 1893. Harry Hillaker, our state climatologist, passes along these notes about the month.

The month averaged 19.7 degrees or 2.9 degrees below normal to rank as the 30th coolest December among 137 years of records. Precipitation averaged 2.73 inches or 1.50 inches greater than normal to rank as the second wettest December of record (behind only 1982???s 3.45 inches). The statewide average snowfall was 24.1 inches, 16.8 inches above normal and the second highest total among any calendar month (only Dec. 2000 had more snow at 25.5 inches). The hefty snowfall total was helped immensely by two huge storms. The first blizzard of December 7-9 brought a statewide average of 10.5 inches of snow. This tied with the blizzard of January 2-4, 1971 as Iowa???s largest snow event since March 10-14, 1951 (a whopper at 14.3 inches). Knoxville reported the most snow with this storm with 17.0 inches. The second event of December 23-27 brought a statewide average of 8.6 inches of snow. This ranks as the fifth greatest storm total since 1950. Spencer reported the most snow from storm #2 with 24.0 inches.
Annual 2009 statistics show a statewide average temperature of 46.6 degrees or 1.2 degrees below normal while precipitation totaled 40.05 inches or 5.97 inches above normal. This ranks as the 25th coolest and 11th wettest year among 137 years of records. Snowfall averaged 42.3 inches or 9.9 inches above normal to rank as the 14th snowiest calendar year among 122 years of records.
