While we have seen plenty of sunshine, a persistent northwesterly breeze has not helped to warm our temperatures any. The uptrend of temperature is nicely shown with the sun making a degree or two of progress each day. This pattern looks to continue this week until a winter storm arrives for the weekend. Perhaps this pattern will break next week with southerly winds helping out the sun's effort to melt the snow! > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 01 Mar 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 3 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 3 Verified: 0 [0.0 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [62.4 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [22.9 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [0.0 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [2045 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.00] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [1.00] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.00] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The long range models have been insisting on a dramatic warm up along with the chance of considerable heavy rainfall as shown by an inch of precipitation accumulated from Sunday into Tuesday with temperatures well above freezing. Many parts of the state have yet to reach 40 degrees, which is approaching a record as shown on the chart for Ames. It is interesting to note how the "latest" line flattens out around 32 F, which basically shows the influence of a deep snowpack in February and early March (much like what is happening this year). Our trend continues in a nice rising bearish wedge with both higher highs and higher lows set each session. We will need a close above the 32 degree resistance (daily low above freezing) to confirm an upward breakout, otherwise we are probably going back to retest the lows back in late February... Of course, temperatures charts do not behave like financial charts, but it is sometimes fun to apply financial charting analytics to meteorology. Ironically, the forecast has an upward breakout, but looks to get cold once again in two weeks. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 04 Mar 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report No Warnings Issued -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The quality controlled NWS COOP data for November 2009 has been uploaded to the IEM. Harry Hillaker, our State Climatologist who kindly provides this dataset, also passes along these notes for the month:

Iowa temperatures averaged 43.3 degrees or 7.7 degrees above normal while precipitation totaled 1.26 inches or 0.88 inches below normal. This ranks as the 6th warmest and 53rd driest November among 137 years of state records. The recent Novembers of 1999 and 2001 were warmer than this one. Donnellson recorded the month???s highest temperature with 77 degrees on the 8th. This was Iowa???s highest temperature since September 27. Sheldon reported the lowest temperature with 16 degrees on the 17th. This was the highest ???minimum??? of record for the state during November (old record of 14 degrees set in 2001). Snowfall averaged only a trace for the state. This is the fifth November to record only a trace for a statewide average. However, only in 1939 did snow occur in fewer locations than in 2009. November averaged just 1.5 degrees cooler than October, the smallest difference on record between these two months (typically November averages 15.3 degrees cooler than October).

The three fall months averaged 50.5 degrees or 0.7 degrees above normal with precipitation averaging 9.43 inches or 1.36 inches above normal. This ranks as the 63rd coolest and 30th wettest fall among 137 years of state records. Oddly enough the temperature and precipitation averages for this fall were both identical to what was recorded in the fall of 2008. However, that fall saw nearly normal temperatures and precipitation in all three months, in sharp contrast to the extremes seen in the fall of 2009.

The following is the number of new daily records set at COOP sites based on data back to 1951.

The IEM continues to back fill our archives of environmental data as various sources of archived data become available. With the raw information, we can then regenerate images and products back into the past. For example, here is an image from the afternoon of the Jordan, Iowa F5 Tornado (13 June 1976).

The pressure analysis shown is very broad and smooth as the observational density is not what it is today.

These plots, generated back to the 1940s, are all available quickly from the IEM Time Machine application linked above. > Daily Feature No feature posted > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 21 Mar 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 1 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 2 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 1 Verified: 1 [100.0 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [61.2 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [33.8 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [51.9 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1196 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.29] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.00] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.29] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have to preface this post by saying that this is one of the most exciting news items I have ever posted since starting the IEM back in 2001. The National Weather Service kindly provided a database format archive of their high end warnings dating back to 1986! This database back fills the IEM's archive dating back to 2002. This database includes Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm, Special Marine, and Flash Flood warnings. So, there is plenty to discuss here regarding this dataset.

  • The NWS provided archive is by no means complete and may contain some errors. The archive of products prior to the mid 1990s contains a bunch of hand editing and input of products. At this point, it is the most complete record that I know of.
  • On 12 Nov 2005, the NWS implemented VTEC for keeping track of their warnings. For years prior to 2005, I have created my own VTEC IDs based on timing and areal logic to try to replicate the current day system. For warnings in 2005 prior to 12 November, no back dating has been done at this time. I'm still working on what exactly to do for this case.
  • IEM's current database of these older warnings (prior 2002) does not also contain the corresponding issuance text. I have the raw data files on disk, but have yet to write code to successfully sync the text to the databased warnings.
  • Storm Based Warnings became operational in 2007, but these polygon warnings were included in the warning text back to roughly the beginning of 2002. The IEM provides these polygons, but keep in mind the official warnings at the time were the county based ones.

So, you may wonder, why do this? This image is why! (it is from 1998!)

We can now construct imagery that was previously nearly impossible to come by. The IEM now has back filled:

There are a number of places on the IEM where you view this information:

The shapefile download application also contains pre-generated yearly shapefiles, some of them are rather huge in size! The current year's shapefile is also pre-generated, once per day. Of course, at any time, you can dynamically request a period of data. Previously, it was very difficult to get a long period of data from the download application.

Whew! There are still some loose ends to clean up, but if nothing else, I have a new source of IEM Daily Features, like these two:

Enjoy! > Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2010-03-26 | Title : The first and the last | Date : 26 Mar 05:10 AM | Votes : Good: 59 Bad: 13 +---------------------------------------------- On Wednesday, a chart featured the slow start to the severe weather season in Iowa. Today's featured chart displays the period between the first and last Severe T'storm and Tornado Warning issued in Iowa. The year of 2008 really sticks out with period shown being nearly the entire year. The latest first warning was on 15 April of 2003, so we should see our first warning this year within the next few weeks. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 26 Mar 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report No Warnings Issued -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
