Friday was certainly an active weather day in Iowa. An early morning Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) rolled through Iowa only to be followed by late afternoon storms along a front. Both systems were able to produce a cloud feature called a "shelf cloud". Remarkably, almost every IEM associated web camera in the KCCI-TV and KCRG-TV network was able to capture one or two lapses of this cloud feature. I put 40 of these lapses together in a single "omnibus" lapse.

The most spectacular of these 40 lapses, IMHO, was one from the Cedar Falls webcam on the UNI campus. You can see the higher up clouds get pushed upward as the shelf rolls through.

A site previously called "Cedar Rapids US30" was flooded out back in 2008 and has been moved up the road closer to Anamosa on US 151. The location identifer of RCRI4 remains with its metadata updated.

I also rewrote the entire RWIS processing scripts today to make them more robust and to better handle missing data. Lamoni got off to a quick start and easily reached 12 inches with a half of the month left to go. Des Moines plodded along, slowly but surely reaching the goal. Ames followed along with Des Moines, but took a nap for a week before quickly making up the difference this past last weekend. The moral of the story is that nobody is happy to have finished this race as we are left with considerable flooding impacts. The good news is that dry weather is in the forecast for this week! > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 28 Jun 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 6 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 98 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 2 Fl Flood 22 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 103 Verified: 47 [45.6 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [73.7 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [26.0 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [26.7 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1213 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.64] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.54] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.36] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... After dry weather on Monday, the featured image shows more dry weather expected by the weather bureau till at least this weekend. Mostly clear skies will also be a big help to work through water logged soils. This June will be close to the wettest month of any on record in Iowa and should be wettest June we have seen. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 29 Jun 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 119 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 2 Fl Flood 11 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 117 Verified: 67 [57.3 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [80.8 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [26.6 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [20.0 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1864 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.83] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.43] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.51] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
