The IEM archives BUFKIT model soundings provided by the National
Weather Service Des Moines. These files are used in an atmospheric
data display program called bufkit.
Anyway, due to a bug on my end, the IEM's archive of NAM bufkit data
between 3 Dec 2009 and 27 Jan 2010 is missing. Unfortunately, there
is not an easy way to recover these files, sorry :(
The IEM's archive of this data dates back to 26 Jan 2006. We
archive the NAM, GFS, and RUC bufkit profiles for sites near Iowa.

The featured map displays the number of hours this winter under a
blizzard warning according to unofficial IEM stored data. Iowa has
certainly seen its share of blizzard conditions this winter with
locations shown in red over 30 hours of blizzard warning time.
Hopefully these totals are not added to for the rest of the winter and
the immediate term forecast would indicate so. The real barometer of
the duration of winter left will be checking his shadow later this
morning.

the month. Positive values would indicate that the trend for the
month is warming. The ten degrees of warming shown for February would
feel nice right about now with bitterly cold air once again settled
into the state. Some warmer weather is in the immediate forecast, but
with the chance of more winter storms.

the Des Moines Airport. For the past 57 days, the site has reported a
snow depth greater than 5 inches. This sets a record for the longest
consecutive period for Des Moines beating out a previous record
stretch from 12 December 1961 TO 3 February 1962. The snow does not
appear to be going anywhere, anytime soon with more winter storms in
the forecast.

to the IEM data coffers. I have also improved the download data page
to allow multi-year requests, instead of one year at a time.
This archive of data contains 260 million observations dating back
to 1995.

The National Weather Service has released their service assessment of
the Floods of June 2008. The IEMChat project is mentioned favorably
in section 4.1.6.1 as a best practice. Since then, the IEMChat
Project was commandeered by the National Weather Service as 'NWSChat'
and will soon be an operational system run by the NWS.
The assessment is a long read, but stresses the importance of
collaboration and data sharing (things the IEM tries to do above all
else).

The one minute interval Iowa ASOS data for January has been uploaded
to the IEM data coffers. Also included are data for Moline, Sioux
Falls, and Omaha.
I also rewrote the data ingestor to make sure I am getting all the
data possible. It was a painful process, since there is little
documentation on the format :)

The featured map displays the percentage of time a road segment was
reported to be in non-normal condition since the first of December.
The orange lines indicate that roughly 40 to 50 percent of the time,
the road has required some sort of work by road crews who have put in
very long hours this winter. Road conditions will deteriorate today
thanks to a strong northwest wind expected to blow the fluffy snow
from these past two days around.

It was just over eight year ago that the first
IEM Daily Feature was posted. The purpose of the feature was to post
something interesting and relevant to Iowa's current weather and
climate. The early years of the daily feature were mostly lame, but
after I added a voting
option the feature quality improved due to personal pride of not
having a poorly rated feature. Today is the 2,000th feature post and
the featured image contains a 6x6 pixel square from each feature to
illustrate nothing in particular :) Anyway, I am glad folks seem to
still enjoy my daily ramblings and I try to make each worth your time
to read. Cheers and here is to the next 2,000 features!

The past three days have seen quite the wild swings in air
temperatures for Ames. On Tuesday morning, clear skies and fresh snow
allowed temperatures to plummet into the negative teens only to
rapidly recover 40+ degrees by noon. Since then, we have been on the
downward trend with lows this morning again approaching the negative
teens. Will we ever experience really warm air again? The forecast
does not hold out much hope with below freezing temperatures expected
into next week.

Those of you that can recall way back on the first day of December, it
was very warm in Iowa that day. Ames hit 60 degrees then. Since
then, we have barely reached 40 degrees. The featured map looks at
the warmest temperature since the 2nd of December and about only the
southern half of the state has seen 40 degree weather in the past 70
some days. The misery looks to continue with more snow and cold
forecast for this weekend.

shown are Hawaii and Alaska. While Alaska surely has snow cover now,
it took a bit of detective work by Patrick Marsh to find snow in Hawaii.
Regardless, it has been an exceptional winter for snow and more snow
is currently falling and blowing in Iowa today.

Clear skies yesterday allowed the sun to help clear Iowa's paved roads
of ice and snow during the daytime. The featured temperature trace is
from the Ames RWIS showing that while air temperatures remained below
freezing, pavement temperatures nicely warmed into the 40s. We are
about a month away from having 12 hours of daylight and each day the
sun gets a bit higher in the sky. Our snow cover's days are numbered,
but how large of a number remains to be seen.

The featured chart plots the number of days it takes for a given
snowfall depth to disappear. The depth is the maximum reported value
during a period of snow cover. Rephrasing, how long does it take to
get rid of the snow once we reach a local maximum of depth. If you
hope that our last snowfall peaked our snow depth around 15 inches
here in Ames, the chart would hint that perhaps we have another 30
days left before the snow disappears. Not good news. The dataset is
separated by time of year and you can see the spring events
(March-May) have a very short duration, which makes sense as
temperatures are warming and solar angle increasing.

The featured chart looks at the probability of having snow cover on a
day during the winter contingent on having snow cover for a given
date. Confused? In other words, if there is snow cover for this
date, how likely was there also snow cover on March 1rst or December
25th of that same winter. One of the disappointing aspects of the
chart are the clear month boundary effects as often the data was
manually quality controlled a month at a time (the end of one month
doesn't match the beginning of the next). The second week of March
shows up nicely as an elevated chance of snow cover, but those events
can then be associated with elevated probabilities in mid January.

The quality controlled NWS COOP data for October 2009 has been
uploaded to the IEM. Harry Hillaker, our State Climatologist who
kindly provides this dataset, also passes along these notes for the month:
The statewide average temperature was 44.8 degrees or 6.1 degrees below
normal while precipitation averaged 6.42 inches or 3.90 inches more than
normal. This ranks as the third coolest October among 137 years of
records
(only 1925 at 40.1 and 1917 at 42.8 were colder). This also ties
with 1881
as the wettest October among 137 years of state records.
Precipitation was
frequent with a statewide average of 18 days of measurable precipitation.
Snow was also frequent during the second week of the month with the state
recording the heaviest snowfall for so early in the fall since October 9,
1970 when Underwood recorded 6.7 inches of snow on the 10th. Finally,
Muscatine reported the highest temperature of the month with a 75 degree
reading on the 21st. This was the first time that temperatures failed to
exceed 77 degrees somewhere in Iowa during the month of October. Sibley
reported the month???s lowest temperature with a 15 degree reading on the
morning of the 11th. Interestingly a lower minimum was not recorded
anywhere in Iowa until December 4.
The following is the number of new daily records set at COOP sites
based on data back to 1951. Look at the number of minimum daily high
temperature!

After some wobbling in weather forecast model predictions of where the
heaviest snowfall would occur this past weekend, the largest amounts
indeed did just stay a bit south of Iowa as shown by the featured
analysis of 24 hour total snowfall reports valid this Monday morning.
The forecast for this week has light snow expected with bitterly cold
air set to arrive on Wednesday. At this point, it looks like we will
need to wait until March for warmer weather.

Ames has not seen a temperature at or above 40 degrees since the first
of December (83 days). The featured graph looks at the longest
periods of consecutive days above or below a certain high temperature
threshold for Ames. The record for consecutive days below 40 appear
is around 92, so we'll have to make it to March to set that record.
The plot is truncated at 1000 days, but values at the extremes go well
beyond 1000.

The featured chart presents three measures of how cold it has been
this month for Des Moines. So far the maximum temperature reported
was a mere 35 degrees, which is easily the lowest value for the month
during previous years on record. Considering the simple daily average
of high and low temperature, this month only ranks 30th coldest and a
full 13 degrees warmer than 1936! Then finally, only considering the
lowest temperature reported, this month only ranks 38th coldest out of
118 years. The moral of the story is that our exceptional snow pack
and many cloudy nights have helped to keep temperatures in a tight
range, with highs typically below freezing and lows not tremendously cold.

The featured map displays NOAA modeled snow water equivalent (the
depth of liquid water present in the snow pack) for the Des Moines
River Basin (red outline) upstream of Saylorville Lake. A crude GIS
calculation indicates that there is enough frozen water in the basin
to fill Saylorville Lake 2.5 times! Of course, not
all of this water will make it downstream into the reservoir, but we
will have to be fairly lucky to melt all of this snow without
significant flooding. The worst case scenario would be for a heavy
rainfall event on top of this extensive snow pack. There is about 550
billion gallons of frozen supply upstream of a reservoir that holds
221 billion gallons.
