Drier air arrived on Sunday and with high temperatures only in the low 80s, it made for a great day to be outside! Yesterday was the first day since June were the heat index failed to reach 85. The blue dots on the chart are the hourly mean value for the day. Heat and humidity are expected to return this week, but nothing like we have recently seen. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 16 Aug 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 7 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 82 0 | 0 0 0 2 0 | 6 Fl Flood 24 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 89 Verified: 39 [43.8 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [75.6 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [30.6 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [22.6 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1363 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.70] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.56] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.37] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Back on 6 May 2007, I was fortunate to captured a spectacular timelapse from the KCCI-TV webcam located at Meswaki Settlement School near Tama, Iowa.

This video recently exceeded 1 million views on YouTube, which is great for a timelapse of clouds! :)

Two collegues from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and myself wrote up a paper on this timelapse and the article is published in the August edition of Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology.

The each sub-chart, blue bars represent a value below average and red bars represent a value above. The bottom chart shows the average difference between the heat index and the air temperature. For this year, the heat index added, on average, more than 4 degrees to the temperature. While this value is the largest shown, the highest air temperature was only 96 degrees and below the average seen in the past 38 years. This year's average temperatures comes in second behind 1983. The humidity has certainly made this year feel very hot compared to years past. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary for 18 Aug 2010 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 38 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 42 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD > IEM Cow Report SVR+TOR Warnings Issued: 38 Verified: 10 [26.3 %] Reduction of Size Versus County Based [89.1 %] Average Perimeter Ratio [25.9 %] Percentage of Warned Area Verified (15km) [10.9 %] Average Storm Based Warning Size [1327 sq km] Probability of Detection(higher is better)[0.72] False Alarm Ratio (lower is better) [0.74] Critical Success Index (higher is better) [0.24] -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... One of the unique datasets the IEM maintains is an archive of composite NEXRAD imagery dating back to 1995. These composites combine single site RADARs into a national composite. Last year, the National Climatic Data Center kindly provided over a terabyte of raw NEXRAD data for the IEM to use to backfill our archive to 1995. At the time, I omitted reprocessing the 2005 and 2006 data for lame reasons. Anyway, it took a spare system I have 2 months, but now the 2005 and 2006 data has been reprocessed with a crude clutter suppression algorithm used during the summer months (April - September). > Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2010-08-24 | Title : Sub 60s set to return | Date : 24 Aug 05:00 AM | Votes : Good: 27 Bad: 4 +---------------------------------------------- It has been a long and muggy summer. Based on that criteria, yesterday was a great weather day in Des Moines and one of 11 days so far this year. The bottom chart displays the monthly frequency of having one of these days.
