The featured image presents the past 15 years of 6 AM NEXRAD composite on the first of May.  Outside of a few light showers shown currently this morning, most of the years looked dry at this time.  This image is a preview of a dataset the IEM is close to finalizing, close to one kilometer resolution NEXRAD composites at a 5 minute interval back to 1995!  This dataset will at least provide lots of material for future features! :)

After an exceptionally warm stretch around the 25th of April, soil temperatures had cooled to around the magic 50 degree level.  Bright sunshine this past weekend has helped to warm temperatures back to necessary levels for corn sprouting and growth.  The question now is if fields will dry out enough to continue planting before our next good chances of rain arrive tomorrow!

The featured map is a composite of <a href="http://www.spc.noaa.gov">Storm Prediction Center</a> issued watches for the year with tornado watches in red and plotted on top of the severe thunderstorm watches in yellow.  This plot shows how almost the entire south and east of Iowa covered by a tornado watch at some point this year. SPC has Iowa in a slight risk today for things other than tornados (wind and hail), so only expect yellow boxes in our area today!

The featured graph is a timeseries of the areal coverage of NEXRAD base reflectivity returns based on <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/docs/nexrad_composites/">IEM generated composites</a>. The values represent the percentage of the state covered by precipitation over time.  Yesterday afternoon saw afternoon showers pop up due to daytime heating.  This plot nicely shows how the peak coverage of storms occured around the time of peak heating from the sun (when the sun is the "highest" in the sky.  Coverage amounts then decrease until sunset.  More showers are expected today.

identifiers (the rest have the standard 5).  This morning, I
implemented a change to correct this bug and now data from these two

This past weekend saw cool temperatures with percentile values near 25, which means that roughly 1/4 of the years prior to this experienced cooler high temperatures.  The forecast for this week looks warmer with a few chances of thunderstorms.

The featured graph shows the contribution of various daily rainfall total amounts to the monthly average for Ames.  The red portion of the bar chart represents when an inch plus of rain falls.  If you were to eliminate the red (stop daily rainfalls over an inch) portion of this chart,  our wettest month would only see a bit over 2 inches of rain.  Another interesting part of this graph is this insignificance of less than 0.05 inch rainfalls to the overall totals (can not see the blues).  Heavy rainfall is currently occuring in Iowa today with some locations definitely picking up more than an inch.

Dew point temperatures this morning are in the 30s and 40s after pushing the 60s to near 70 on Wednesday.  A strong cold front swept the state clean of muggy air on Wednesday helping to fire some strong thunderstorms in Southeastern Iowa.  Today looks to be a fantastic day with sunshine and temperatures in the upper 60s.

While Iowa has generally seen less than 24 hours of total watch time, the areas in red indicate counties over 60 hours (4 and a half days).  Some strong thunderstorms are expected today, but the worst of the weather will stay to our south.

After a record cold start in some locations on Sunday, afternoon temperatures only warmed to around 50 degrees.  The featured chart plots the daily high versus low temperature reported at the Ames COOP site on the 17th's of May since 1893.  The red dot is the observation for 2009.  The guidelines were manually added to show how the observations fit into somewhat predictable ranges.  Warmer weather is in store this week with highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s.

After a cold weekend, our winds switched around to the south and ushered in much warmer air to the state.  The featured graph shows air temperature and wind speed since Sunday with forecasted values from the GFS model shown by the dashed line.  Gusty winds are expected today and again on Wednesday with high temperatures in the 80s!

The featured map attempts to show why some locations in Iowa were able to reach the mid 90s while others only the lower 80s.  The plotted values were the high temperature for Tuesday while the contour shows the potential temperature of air at 850 hPa (around a half mile above the ground).  Given the higher potential temperature air in Northwest Iowa, strong winds were able to help mix down warmer air allowing for rapid warming and the warmest temperatures.  One more day of really warm air is expected before a cool front places us back in the 70s for the end of the week.

<p>The IEM is very proud to announce the completion of a 7 month
processing effort to back fill the IEM generated CONUS NEXRAD
composites back to 1 Jan 1995!  Firstly, a huge thanks to Steve Ansari
at the National Climatic Data Center for providing a massive amount of
data to make this possible.

<p>So for every 5 minutes back to 1 Jan 1995, there now exists a
composite of available NEXRAD base reflectivity at approximately 1 km
resolution.  This dataset is by no means complete or perfect.  There
are a few limited data holes in NCDC's dataset and general
unavailability of some NEXRAD sites.  Another caveat is that 1995 and
somewhat 1996 can have rather sparse converge of online NEXRADs. 
Having said all that, I am positive that this dataset is of value and
worth the effort!

<p>So what can you do with this dataset?  Well, you can:
<ul>
 <li>View composites along with <a
href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/GIS/apps/rview/watch.phtml">SPC
watches</a> back to 1997</li>
 <li>View pre-generated <a
href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/current/mcview.phtml?prod=comprad&java=none&mode=realtime&frames=1">historical
lapses</a></li>
 <li>Query the data from the <a
href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/ogc/">IEM WebMap GIS
Service</a></li>
</ul>
and there are probably other applications I am forgetting about :)

<p>The mtarchive website contains the daily tar files of base
reflectivity and net echo tops <a
href="http://mtarchive.geol.iastate.edu/nexrad3_archive/">here</a>.
The dataset is about 1.3 terabytes.

<p>I have not back filled the daily time composites yet, but will
perhaps start that process at a later date.

While showers and brief thunderstorms visited the state for Memorial Day weekened, it was far from being a washout.  The featured map shows estimates of the total amount of time it rained with most locations only seeing an hour or so over the 72 hour period.  The most widespread and longest duration rainfall came on Monday afternoon and evening.  The rain chances will continue this week with some locations expected to pick up a couple of inches.

<a href="http://www.vortex2.org/home/">VORTEX2</a> is the code name for a large scientific field project to measure stormscale environments around tornadic storms.  The project has been out chasing storms since about the 10th of May, but has had very little organized severe weather to work with. In fact, the dearth of severe weather for this time of year is rather unprecidented.  The featured image displays the daily number of <a href="http://www.spc.noaa.gov">SPC</a> issued watches for May since 1997 (oldest date of digital records).  Areas of white indicate no watches issued and you can see the drought of 2009 is largest area on this plot. Greg Carbin of SPC wrote an interesting <a href="http://www.norman.noaa.gov/2009/05/1137/">blog post</a> on how rare this quiet period of May has been.  Based on forecast models, business for the VORTEX2 project appears to be picking up with a more organized severe weather expected.

<p>A new webcamera has been added to the KCRG-TV CityCam network. 
This camera is located on top of the Innovative Teaching Technology
Center on the University of Northern Iowa Campus in Cedar Falls.  The
camera has a great view of the Unidome!

<p>By the way, this camera and the recently added Parkersburg
webcamera are the new Canon VB-C60 network camera.  So far, I have
been extremely pleased with this camera versus the previous VB-C50
version that many of the other cameras are.  Some of the older KCCI-TV
webcameras are the VB-C10.

<p>The IEM online short term archive of NEXRAD Level2 data has been
expanded to support roughly 2 days worth of data.  Previously, it only
held 10 hours worth.  I was frequently getting questions as to why
this was the case and requests for it to expand slightly.  The reason
was because the disk storage used could only support 10 hours worth
before filling!

This past Tuesday evneing saw an impressive duration and accumulation of rainfall with totals by Wednesday morning approaching 4 inches.  The featured graph is a 1 minute timeseries from the KCCI-TV SchoolNet site at St Cecilia in Ames showing rainfall accumulation and hourly intensity based on 20 minute intervals.  The plot shows that outside of the 1.25 inch/hr intensity around 5 PM, most of the event saw intensities of around 0.5 inch/hr or less.  The long duration gave the soil a chance to soak in some of the water and limited the flooding impacts to urban areas.

The featured map is an analysis of precipitation departure from average so far this year.  Most of the state is within a few inches of their average value.  The wettest area is the southeast corner where totals are running 6+ inches greater than average.  Rain is in the forecast this weekend with good chance for some severe weather as well.
