The featured chart is the yearly difference between the number of days with a high temperature above average versus below for Ames. Negative numbers represent having more days below average than above. 1932 has the largest positive value while 1993 the lowest. For our recent decade, 2008 was the only year with a considerable number of more days below average. The number thus far for 2009 is a mere -4. Our weather is expected to creep above average later this week.

Just a few weeks ago we featured a belt of snow visible from the Terra MODIS satellite. Two snow storms later, we have another interesting pattern shown in today's feature with the western and northern borders of the state covered. Warmer weather for the rest of this week should melt a good portion of this snowfield.

IEM. The climodat reports have been updated accordingly.
Our State Climatologist, Harry Hillaker, passes along this summary
for the month:
The statewide average temperature was 50.8 degrees or 0.1 degree
below normal. Precipitation averaged 3.35 inches or 0.83
inches above normal. Snowfall averaged only a trace or 0.4
inches below normal. This ranks as the 53rd coolest and
27th wettest October among 136 years of statewide records.
There have been 63 other Octobers with a statewide average of
a trace of snowfall and 16 with no snow at all among 122 years
of statewide snowfall statistics.

The featured table presents the number of days that the high temperature was in a certain temperature range for meteorological winter (December, Januuary, and February). The year shown is the year of the December month of the period. This winter has seen its fair share of cold days and warm. It could have been worse like last year or even 1978. The chart also shows a few exceptional years in our recent past.

On Tuesday, the interesting snow cover pattern was featured showing the western portion of the state with snow on the ground. Warm air surged into the state on Wednesday, but the warmest temperatures were in Central Iowa where no snow had to be melted. Temperatures should be even warmer today with record highs possbile!

In some locations, low temperatures on Thursday were warmer than the average high temperature for the date. The featured chart looks into the frequency of this occurance with the bars representing the number of years that this has occurred for Ames. The red line is the record daily maximum low temperature and the black line is the daily average high temperature. Notice that during the summer season, the black line is always higher. In fact, the period of 9 May to 29 Sep has never seen a low temperature greater than the average high for Ames!

The National Weather Service has released their internal
assessment of the "Super Tuesday" outbreak of tornadoes last
year on 5-6 Feb 2008. Recall this outbreak occurred during the
"Super Tuesday" election date when many states have their
primaries. Anyway, this assessment contains a few graphics generated
by the IEM and includes IEMChat as a best practice:
"Best Practice 6: IEM Chat was used by five of six offices
during this event and was a beneficial tool to both the WFOs
and the media."
Of course, IEMChat is no longer active as it has been
commandeered by the National Weather Service as NWSChat :)

Heavy rainfall, sleet, and snow frequented the state this past weekend leading to many flooding issues. The featured map is of rainfall estimates for Saturday and Sunday showing most of Southeast Iowa in the 2-5 inch range. Unfortunately, the next storm system is due to arrive this Monday evening with the same locations expected to receive heavy rainfall.

IEM Cow is an affectionately named application that provides
unofficial NWS storm based warning verification. As an aside,
"IEM Cow" is the most frequently used search term on google
sending web traffic to the IEM. Anyway...
IEM Cow has been updated to include what I am currently calling a
"perimeter ratio". This value attempts to estimate what portion
of the storm based warning boundary was influenced by political
boundaries. A value of 0% would be ideal implying that the entire
polygon boundary was drawn without consideration to a county
boundary. These values are not exact and only estimates based on
some spatial database logic.
To visually see this estimate, the "Google Map" portion of the
VTEC product browser now optionally plots this on the map. Click
on the "Show County Intersection" button.

Last Friday, we were experiencing low temperatures around our average high for the date. Today, we are on the opposite end with high temperatures near our average lows. The featured chart looks at frequency of having the high temperature below the average low. As with Friday's chart, there is a period in the summertime where this has never occured for Ames. Our actual weather is expected to warm up this weekend!

Within a week, our temperatures go from well above average to well below average as nicely shown by the featured plot. The high temperature of 19 in Ames was the coldest high temperature after the 10th of March since 1998 and you have to go back to 1965 to find a similiar temperature prior to that. Our road to recovery begins today with much warmer highs expected for the weekend.

The quality controlled NWS COOP data for November 2008 has
been uploaded to the IEM. Harry Hillaker, our state
climatologist, passes along this note about the month:
The statewide average temperature was 37.1 degrees or 1.5
degrees above normal while precipitation totaled 1.78 inches
or 0.36 inches below normal.Snowfall averaged 2.4 inches or
1.1 inches below normal. This ranks as the 62nd warmest
and 52nd wettest November among 136 years of state records. The
statewide average snowfall was the 52nd highest among 122 years
of Iowa snowfall statistics. Some of the rankings may appear
to be in conflict with the normals. This is partly due to n
ormals being expressed as means rather than medians. Also,
the 'normals' are computed based upon the 1971-2000 period while
the overall historical record, from which the rankings come,
is much longer.

With high temperatures in the 70s a few days this March, we have warmed 100+ degrees in the past 48 days from low temperatures around -30 on 16 January. The featured chart looks at the shortest period of 18 days for a 100+ degree temperature change for Ames based on data back to 1900. Let us hope our weather doesn't cool 100 degrees in the next few weeks!

The featured map is a time composite of maximum NEXRAD reflectivity. A large storm system to our west fired thunderstorms over the plains yesterday and the streaks show how the storm moved. Some of them moved northeast while others moved north or even northwest. The large system remains to our west this morning with another round of wet weather ongoing. The next storm system for the end of the week may bring heavy snowfall!

The featured time series is from the weather station on top of the Agronomy Building in Ames on Tuesday. A cold front dropped temperatures mid morning, but some clearing and warmer air worked its way into the state by mid afternoon allowing temperatures to recover some before sunset. The resulting curve looks as if somebody got hungry and took a bite out of it!

For the most part, 2009 has been rather quiet nationwide for severe weather up until this week. The featured image shows the daily number of severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings issued in the United States. It is interesting to note the 8 some days of nearly no warnings in mid March. The Storm Prediction Center has three large areas of slight risk predicted for the next three days, so zeros on this chart don't appear likely anytime soon.

On April 1st, National Weather Service Offices in the Central Region will be changing its severe weather warning criteria for hail size to one inch and larger (previously was penny sized 0.75). Some details behind the reason for this change can be found with this NWS webinar. The featured pie charts attempt to look forward to one probable outcome of this change, a decrease in the number of warnings. Of the 2200 warnings issued in the past two years, 24% of them were verified by only hail stones that would no longer justify a warning. The lower pie chart details the initial justification for issuing the warning based on product text. Please note the warning may have included a justifcation of damaging wind as well as hail, but this analysis only worries about what hail size was included. Half of the warnings issued mentioned hail sizes that will no longer be severe, again there may have been damaging winds mentioned in those as well.

After the snow stopped falling on Sunday morning, the skies cleared and the sun made quick work of removing a good portion of what fell. The featured animation is visible satellite imagery from Sunday showing the initial snow cover quickly melt away. Unfortunately, another storm will bring snow to the state on Tuesday.
