The biggest threat may be the heavy rain expected as storms will not be in a hurry to move anywhere and will tend to train over the same areas. All of this makes for an active start to June after a rather calm last half of May. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 01 Jun 2009 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 7 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 178 2 | 0 5 2 6 0 | 3 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Wed Jun 3 11:01:03 2009 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) Date: Wed, 3 Jun 2009 11:01:03 -0500 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200906031601.n53G132V005177@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 02 June 2009 > News +---------------------------------------------- | Title : NEXRAD WMS-T Change | Date : 03 Jun 10:36 AM | Author: Daryl Herzmann | URL : http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/ogc/ +----------------------------------------------

The three lines are the frequency of given minimum precipitation thresholds. While there are a number of things going on to make this plot appear the way it does, it generally shows that the frequency of rainfall events increases as our temperature increases (more rainfall in the summer). The interesting detail is to note what happens when temperatures reach the 90s. Our chances of rainfall decrease as the temperature gets even warmer. One could speculate that when our temperatures get really warm, the air mass is often drier and soil moisture state is drier as well allowing more efficient warm ups. Rewording, having temperatures in the 90s for Ames is probably associated with a dry weather pattern. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 04 Jun 2009 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 9 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 1 Svr Tstorm 65 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 4 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Sat Jun 6 11:01:02 2009 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) Date: Sat, 6 Jun 2009 11:01:02 -0500 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200906061601.n56G12BZ023594@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 05 June 2009 > News No news is good news > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2009-06-05 | Title : 7 days of rainfall v. High | Date : 05 Jun 06:06 AM | Votes : Good: 11 Bad: 7 +---------------------------------------------- Building off of yesterday's feature, today's feature looks at the mean amount of rainfall in three different 7 day periods for a given high temperature in June for all sites in Iowa. For a given day, these 7 day periods are the 7 days prior to the high temperature, the 7 days centered on the high temperature, and the 7 days after. The plot indicates an interesting regime change from when we have highs in the 70s versus highs in the 90s. Notice how in the 70s, the centered and after lines mostly track, while in the 90s the prior and centered lines track. One interuptation would be that when temperatures warm up, more rainfall comes in the forecast and effectively knocks temperatures back down into what is shown in the 70s with more precipitation in the prior period. The overall decrease in precipitation for increasing temperatures is also important (the sun can more effectively warm the ground when it is drier [less precip] ). Rain is in the forecast for this weekend with some strong storms possible. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 05 Jun 2009 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 23 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 2 Svr Tstorm 83 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 2 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Sun Jun 7 11:01:02 2009 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) Date: Sun, 7 Jun 2009 11:01:02 -0500 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200906071601.n57G12ku001243@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 06 June 2009 > News No news is good news > Yesterday's Daily Feature No feature posted. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 06 Jun 2009 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 3 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 93 0 | 0 0 0 11 0 | 5 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Mon Jun 8 11:01:02 2009 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) Date: Mon, 8 Jun 2009 11:01:02 -0500 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200906081601.n58G12MG008142@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 07 June 2009 > News No news is good news > Yesterday's Daily Feature No feature posted. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 07 Jun 2009 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 27 3 | 0 0 3 1 0 | 3 Svr Tstorm 156 15 | 0 6 10 23 2 | 6 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Tue Jun 9 11:01:03 2009 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) Date: Tue, 9 Jun 2009 11:01:03 -0500 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200906091601.n59G13Ob012052@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 08 June 2009 > News +---------------------------------------------- | Title : May ASOS data uploaded | Date : 08 Jun 03:31 PM | Author: Daryl Herzmann | URL : http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/request/asos/1min.phtml +---------------------------------------------- The 1 minute interval Iowa ASOS data for May has been uploaded to the IEM data coffers. The quality controlled Iowa COOP data for January has been uploaded to the IEM with the climodat reports updated as well. Our State Climatologist, Harry Hillaker, passes along these notes for the month.

The statewide average temperature was 13.0 degrees or 4.8 degrees below normal. This was the coldest January since 1994 and coldest calendar month since December 2000. Precipitation averaged 0.70 inches or 0.25 inches less than normal, this is exactly the same as last January. Snowfall averaged 10.6 inches or 4.4 inches above normal; the fifth January of the past six with about this same amount. Temperatures ranked 26th coldest and precipitation 42nd driest among 137 years of records. Snowfall ranked 22nd greatest among 122 Januarys.

The most notable event of the month was a severe cold wave in mid January. Several locations set all-time record minimum temperatures on the morning of the 16th (except Cedar Rapids Airport set their record on the 15th).

There is now an application on the website allowing you to dynamically generate the above image for a time and location of your choice. Hopefully folks find it useful. > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2009-06-15 | Title : Our best is only 86 | Date : 15 Jun 06:13 AM | Votes : Good: 16 Bad: 3 +---------------------------------------------- Since the first of May, the warmest temperature recorded in Ames was 86 degrees back in mid May. This ranks as the third lowest high temperature for the period as compared with all other years back to 1893. It is disconcerting to see the years 1993 and 2008 (flood years) show up on this plot as well. There is some hope in the forecast for warmer weather with highs back in the 80s by Wednesday. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 15 Jun 2009 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 87 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 4 Svr Tstorm 349 0 | 0 0 0 3 0 | 7 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Wed Jun 17 11:01:02 2009 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu) Date: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 11:01:02 -0500 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200906171601.n5HG12cB011671@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 16 June 2009 > News No news is good news > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2009-06-16 | Title : Winds and Rain | Date : 16 Jun 06:10 AM | Votes : Good: 12 Bad: 5 +---------------------------------------------- The featured image is an attempt to show how the wind changes direction when it rains. The field project ended for the year on the 13th of June and you can see how severe weather activity has increased since then!
