<p>A new version of the IEM Webcam "Still Images" application is now
available.  This app has the following new features:
<ul>
 <li>AJAX (web 2.0) based loading of images</li>
 <li>Individual sites can be selectively enabled/disabled, this
massively cuts down on bandwidth usage if necesary</li>
 <li>Application uses a JSON data store that other web developers may
find useful.</li>
 <li>Images can be sorted by county, name, or identifier.  This
hopefully fixes a major complaint of the old application.</li>
 <li>The top and side panel can be collapsed to allow a more "full
screen" appearance.</li>
</ul>

<p>I tested this app on Firefox and IE 5-7, so hopefully it works for
you.  The <a
href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/current/camera.phtml">old
application</a> is still available at the same address.  If I don't
get any complaints, I will eventually retire it.

Preliminary data would suggest that Ames did not receive a daily rainfall over one inch for the month of June.  The featured chart shows the frequency of having an one inch rainfall per day for the month of June.  2008 experienced 3 days while 1947 had 5.  While June 2009 still has one day to go, the chances of getting rain today are near zero.

The featured chart is the yearly maximum stretch of days where the high temperature was 80+ ??F for Ames.  So far this year, we have seen a stretch of 13 days while all of 2008 only experienced an 11 day period.  In general, the longest stretches were prior to the 1960s with 1936 having a 70 day period!  Our forecast has highs in the 80s, but barely 80 for the weekend.

Sometimes the winds experienced on the backside of a storm complex can be stronger than what occurs with the precipitation.  The featured chart is a 1 minute interval timeseries from the United Community SchoolNet8 station east of Boone Iowa.  The rapid pressure drop shown was associated with the backside of a thunderstorm complex to the south comprising a surface "wake low" structure.  Wind speeds increased until when the pressure stopped dropping.

High temperatures this year have struggled to reach 80, while during 1936 highs were over 100 each day after the 5th. Some of you around the Ames area may have noticed the gusty winds early this morning.  An evaporating area of light rain probably helped to bring stronger winds down to the ground along with rapidly dropping pressures.  The featured plot nicely shows the increase in wind speed along with the rapid drop in pressure.

Tuesday evening and into early Wednesday morning saw a strong line of storms bring heavy rain and large hail to Iowa.  The featured image is the max base reflectivity composite for a time period between 7 PM Tuesday evening to 7 PM Wednesday.  The white dot on the map is the location of Ames and you can see that the storm tracks missed the city.  Very large hail (upwards of 3 inch diameter) was reported just south of Ames in the Des Moines area.

The featured map is a combination of record minimum high temperatures for Friday and model forecasted 850 hPa potential temperature (a level in the atmosphere a few thousand feet above our head).  As the sun tries to heat our air from the ground up, it mixes the air down that is in the lowest part of the atmosphere.  For today, this air is rather cool and will help to keep high temperatures today near record minimum values.  We are also starting off with temps only in the lower 50s!  Where did summer go as this feels like fall!

The amazingly cool July continued this past weekend with high temperatures again struggling to reach 70 degrees in some locations. The featured chart shows the daily range of high temperatures reported this year and back in 1936 for Iowa.  Unofficial IEM data would indicate that two days this month were completely below 80 statewide.  Since 1951, this has only happened one other year (in 1997).  The forecast for the rest of the month looks to continue this cool pattern we have been in with the hot air remaining just to our west and south.

Hard to not keep featuring the cool temperatures this month with another day expected below average today.  Only two days this month have been above average for Ames and that was barely above (less than a full degree).  The forecast does hold out some hope for a return to the 80s, but no major heat in store.

The featured chart compares the average temperature for a month with the other months for the same year.  The number represents the years for which the given month was warmer than the other.  So far June has been warmer than July, which is somewhat rare (happening only 3 times since 1951).  There is time for July to make a comeback and assume its rightful place as warmest month this year.

uploaded to the IEM.  This kindly information is provided to the IEM
on a month by month basis by the Iowa State Climatologist, Harry
Hillaker. He also passes along these information tidbits:</p>

Our recent stretch of cool July weather has left places like Dubuque below 80 degrees for nearly the last 2 weeks.  Based on unofficial IEM data, the featured image details the number of consecutive days various Iowa locations have been below 80.  The streaks are ongoing for places like Cedar Rapids and Dubuque, but temperatures are expected to warm nicely into the 80s ahead of a front passage today.

The machine responsible for processing NEXRAD data had a SCSI
controller lock up just before 6 PM on Sunday (26 Jul).  I got things
straightened out and back to normal around 8 PM.

The featured plot is of actual and average accumulated growing degree days for Dubuque since the first of May. The bars show the daily accumulated departure from average.  The cool July has doubled the deficit with the total now some 400 units of what it should be.

The featured image is a wind rose for July for the Dubuque Airport.  The top image is the summary for this July, while the bottom image is the July climatology based on the last 30 some years of data. The lack of southwest winds is clearly shown and the overall lack of strong wind speeds.  Our winds this morning are back to the northwest as yet another cool front has swept the state clean of muggy air.

The featured map is a summary of growing degree days based on Iowa ASOS network daily observations.  When compared against long term data, the percentile for this year's values are mostly below 10 (blue number).  Based on these unofficial numbers, places like Dubuque and Davenport have not seen smaller GDD accumulations for the period of 1 May thru 28 July.  More cool weather is in the forecast with highs struggling to reach 70 on Thursday!

Last Friday, an extremely strong thunderstorm complex dropped a bunch of large hail over NE Iowa and SW Wisconsin.  The NWS has an excellent summary of this event <a href="http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&storyid=29983&source=0">here</a> and <a href="http://www.crh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=mkx&storyid=29907&source=0">here</a>.  The featured image is a combination of <a href="http://rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/subsets/?subset=USA3.2009210">Terra MODIS</a> satellite for yesterday and maximum NEXRAD reflectivity for the event.  The area shown initially in gray is unfortunately massive crop damage as the green leaves were shredded by the large hail and the area no longer appears to be lush green from space.  You can see the streaks in the damage as the storms moved off to the southeast.
