Visible satellite imagery from Monday shows a curious line stretching from near Lamoni to Decorah. When the skies are cloud free, visibile satellite imagery can see snow and ice accumulations on the ground.  This particular line was generated from a brief snowfall on <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/current/mcview.phtml?prod=comprad&java=script&mode=archive&frames=10&interval=60&year=2008&month=12&day=27&hour=15&minute=10">Saturday</a> that fell behind the area of freezing rain.

If did not take much rain on Saturday evening to turn Iowa's roads to a sheet of ice.  The featured time series is from the RWIS site on US Highway 20 near Waterloo.  The green line (dew point) tells the story of what happened to cause an icing event.  Moist air was surging into the state on Saturday with air temperatures hovering just below freezing. Since the cold air was shallow and near saturation, rain was able to fall to the ground without much evaporation nor phase change and then immediately freeze as pavement temperatures were below freezing.  The timing of this event late in the afternoon followed by a cold front passage both conspired to prevent most any melting over night.  Cold temperatures on Sunday kept nearly all of this ice around on untreated surfaces.

For the past few months, I have been slowly hacking at a new and
improved VTEC Product Browser.  After about two months of beta and
very few complaints, it is time to make it the default app and
see what bugs shake out.

In my humble opinion, the new interface is leaps and bounds 
more intuitive than the prior one.  It also contains a number of
new features, including the ability to drag a slider bar to see
the evolution of NEXRAD imagery and storm based warnings.

Please let me know of any bugs you encounter.

Continuing in the series of <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/tags/climate.html">climate</a> features, today's plot is of the hourly frequency of an observed 10+ mph wind speed by month based on archived data from Des Moines.  Those of us that live in Central and Northwest Iowa notice the many wind farms that are being built.  Obviously, these turbines need reliable wind speeds to generate power.  This plot indicates that outside of the afternoon hours in the spring and fall, having 10+ mph winds is roughly a 50% or lower chance on a daily basis.

For the past month or so, the IEM has been processing and 
archiving the NAM and GFS Model Output Statistics data.  We are 
saving data for all of the sites available in the feed.

This was primarily done to support some of the ISU Senior 
Thesis projects done each year on the MOS data.  I suspect that
others will find it useful as well, so it is now linked in on the
website under 'Archive'.

Currently, the archive is complete back to 3 December 2008, but it
could be backfilled for a number of years based on raw text archives
stored locally and at the NWS.  If there is interest, I'll backfill
it :)

At this point, there are two applications available on the page 
including an interactive table viewer on how a MOS variable changes
over time and with model iteration.  There is also a simple CSV 
application that web developers may find of use.

The climodat reports contain pre-generated climate information
for long term climate sites in Iowa.  The data source of this
information is the NWS COOP network, which is quality controlled 
by the state climatologist.  The turn around time for this information
is often a few months.  I often get requests for either estimates or
preliminary data for the months after the most recent update.

So now, I am including preliminary data available either from NCDC
or local IEM processing to supplement the climodat reports in lieu 
of the quality controlled information's arrival.  

Data for Sep, Oct, and Nov has been added to the website.

The featured graph is a time series from the Spencer airport sensor showing air temps, wind speeds, and visibility distance.  The morning hours saw a round of snowfall followed by improving conditions where temperatures rose to above freezing in many locations followed by a frontal passage with rapidly deteoriating conditions followed by a decrease in wind speeds with improving visibilities by bitterly cold temperatures.  All of that makes for quite the weather day! The next winter storm will be here this evening already!

The featured map is a time summary of NEXRAD reflectivity for a period of 6 PM Tuesday evening till 7 AM this Wednesday morning.  The plot is the total amount of time during that period that a 30+ dbZ radar reflectivity was observed in the base composite generated by the IEM.  The speckles in the plot indicate areas of persistent ground clutter (where the radar sees objects on the ground instead of rain/snow).  The darker reds coincide nicely with an area that picked up 3-7 inches of snowfall over night.

Here are some talking points about the exceptionally cold 
weather today (15 Jan 2009).  Please note that these statements
are not official.

 - Cedar Rapids broke the all-time record low temperature
   with an observation of -29.  This breaks the previous record
   of -28 .  Of course, the -29 also breaks the record for 15 Jan.
   The wind chill dropped to -52 degrees at 7:52 this morning,
   which is close to the coldest value of -55 on Jan 20 1985.  This
   is based on data the IEM has back to 1973 or so.

 - Dubuque set a record low for 15 Jan of -26, breaking the 
   previous record of -25.

Davenport NWS noted that these records may be in danger of being
broke this evening at midnight before the day is done!

 - Sioux City hit a record low of -20, breaking the previous record
   for Jan 15 of -18.

Overall, today was the coldest day in Iowa since 3 Feb 1996.  

Many locations in the state will struggle to get above zero.  The last
day with widespread highs below 0 was 4 Feb 2007.

A number of locations are struggling to reach -10F, the last time
this has happened was the same 3 Feb 1996.

Minimum morning wind chills:
  Iowa City    -43  Esterville   -50  Dubuque      -36
  Cedar Rapids -52  Des Moines   -38  Mason City   -48
  Waterloo     -45  Spencer      -48  Marshalltown -48

The wind chill at Des Moines was below -30F for 10 hours this 
morning. The last duration of this length happened back in 1997
and the last duration of even over 3 hours happened back in 1999. 

Looking at durations of extreme wind chills, the period up till
25 Dec 1983 was exceptionally cold.  The wind chill at Waterloo 
was below -30F for 90 straight hours (~4 days!).

A brutally cold air mass is currently entrenched over the Upper MidWest with low temperatures this morning in the minus teens and twenties across Iowa.  The featured analysis shows negative numbers over much of the area.  The big question today is if we will warm to above zero!

Another just amazing day of cold weather, but at least it is coming
to an end for now.  Here are some unofficial notes for the cold
weather today (16 Jan 2009)...

 - The Ames airport dropped to at least -30F degrees with the COOP
   observer dropping to -33F. The ISU Ag Farm (which may or may 
   not be the 'official') for Ames got to -22F. The previous 
   record low for today was -22F.  The last -30F reading
   from Ames Ag Farm was 14 Jan 1957.

 - Spencer hit a record low for today of -28F, the previous was
   -26F.

 - Burlington tied a record low of -18F.

 - Cedar Rapids broke their record low this morning with an 
   observation of at least -27F.

 - Waterloo tied an all-time record low of -34 and easily broke
   the previous record low for today of -26F.

 - Mason City dropped to -31F, breaking the previous record of -25F.

 - Ottumwa broke their record low of -19F by dropping to -20F this
   morning.

The Monticello AWOS station recorded a low temperature of -38F, which
must be close to a record for an automated station in Iowa.  Colder 
values reported in the state were probably from manual thermometers.
I am still checking into this, so don't authoritatively quote me 
on it :)

The Coggon NWS COOP observation this morning was of -40F, this is
the first -40 reading in the state since 3 Feb 1996.

Just another amazingly cold morning with low temperatures in the -40 to -20 degree range in Eastern Iowa.  The featured plot of AWOS low temperatures shows a -38 in Monticello!  Not shown, Waterloo tied its all-time record low temperature of -34.  Temperatures are expected to warm up today and be near freezing this weekend, that is a 50 some degree warm up!

A friendly IEM user wondered why the ASOS currents for
temperature did not always match the hourly summary that
the NWS generates.  The IEM generates this information by 
parsing the weather observations reported in METAR format.
One of the complications of this data stream is that METARs
routinely are reported in duplicate fashion with slight
differences.  Here is an example:

For Waterloo, this METAR comes in the data stream:

KALO 190054Z AUTO 33010KT 10SM OVC055 M03/M06 A2982 
     RMK AO2 SNE24 SLP109 P0000 T10331056

The T-group component gives precision necessary to convert
this Celsius value (1033) into the Fahrenheit value recorded by
the ASOS (26F).  So the IEM database recorded 26...

Then this duplicate METAR comes a few moments later:

KALO 190054Z AUTO 33010KT 10SM OVC055 M03/M06 A2982

Since this observation does not have the T-group, the Celsius
value (M03) converts to 26.6 or 27F! So the IEM database 
recorded 27 and displays 27, while the NWS product has 26 
in the summary.

Well, I wrote some logic to hopefully detect when this happens
and not use the less precise temperature value when the T-group
was present in a prior ob valid at the same time.  Hopefully, 
I just did not introduce new bugs!

The featured time series from the Esterville Airport shows a period of 87 hours were the temperature never exceeded 0 degree F.  Thankfully temperatures have been near freezing these past few days allowing some melting to occur.  We will have a few more chances to get above freezing this week before more winter storms are expected to return next week.

about the first of December, I have begun tagging the daily feature

The featured map is from the excellent <a href="http://www.nohrsc.nws.gov/interactive/html/map.html">NOAA NOHRSC</a> website showing the modeled snow water equivalent.  This is simply the depth of liquid water contained in the snow pack.  Our lack of days above freezing has allowed the snowfalls to accumulate into a snow pack containing between 2-5 inches of water over the northern half of the state.  The hope is for a slow snow melt so that the rivers have a chance to move water downstream.  Some melting should occur this week as temperatures are expected to warm above freezing.

The IEM's archive of MOS (Model Output Statistics) has been
backfilled to 3 May 2007.  This date was when I started archiving
the raw text product and so it was easy to backfill to that date.

The NWS has an archive dating back 5-7 years further, but it will
take some more code to process that dataset.  I will need to make
sure that the IEM's database server can handle it. It would also
be nice to see if any IEM users are interested in this dataset 
as well. :)

The featured map is an analysis of reported snow depth and high temperature on Wednesday.  The 32 degree isotherm nicely lines up with the boundary between deep snowpack and bare ground.  It will be interesting to see how far into the snow field the warmer air can get today.  Deep snow pack tends to create a very shallow layer of cold air that is difficult to mix warm air into or scour out.

The featured map is of high and low temperatures on Thursday.  The snow free areas in Southern Iowa warmed nicely into the mid 50s, while those with considerable snow on the ground were 20-30 degrees colder.  Our brief warm up is coming to an abrupt end today with cold air trucking into the state this morning.  Highs on Saturday will be in the single digits, sigh.

The featured chart is the frequency of daily snow depth changes when there is snow on the ground based on 43 years of data from Ames.  During the winter time, the most common thing to happen is no change.  This plot would indicate that having the snowpack decrease is more likely than increase.  The height of the stacked line chart indicates overall frequency of having snow on the ground.  Light fluffy snow is in the forecast for this week, so more green than red for us.

Like <a href="http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2009-01-26">yesterday's</a> feature on snow pack, today's feature presents a similiar plot for high temperature.  The plot summarizes the day to day change in high temperature based on 100 years of data from Ames.  The green area represents when the next day high temperature is within 5 degrees of the previous high.  The red area represents when the high temperature change is greater than 5 degrees and blue area less then negative five degrees.  The white lines denote 25, 50, and 75 years.  The plot indicates that our next day high temperature is within 5 degrees of the previous high roughly 50% of the time.  An interesting note is to notice where the blue and red areas exceed the 25 and 75 thresholds.  These are times of year marked by warming (springtime) and cooling (fall).

The featured chart is a time series of temperature from Waterloo for January 2009.  The blue line is 32°F and you will notice that the red line never exceeds it!  The entire month of January has been at or below freezing, which would be the first time this has happened in Iowa in January since 1979. Of course, there is still a few days left to warm above freezing, but the forecast model shown in black maintains the freezing temps into Saturday.

The quality controlled NWS COOP data for September has been uploaded
to the IEM.  The State Climatologist, Harry Hillaker passed along
these notes for the month:

 - The statewide averages were 63.6 degrees or 0.7 degrees 
   above the 1971-2000 normal for temperatures and 4.30 inches 
   of precipitation or 0.89 inches above the 30-year normal.   
   This ranks 67th warmest and 39th wettest September among 136 
   years of records.   This was the first month of the year
   to average warmer than the 30-year normal.   This was also 
   the wettest September since 1992.

Here is a listing of the number of new records broken for 
September.  I failed to mention last month that August finally
broke a few record high temperatures.  The period of not 
breaking record highs failed to exceed a period in 1993, the 
last great flood year.

The featured calender charts the departure from average of the daily high temperature for Ames this month.  While there have been a number of days slightly above average, many of the days were well below.  Warmer weather is expected for the rest of the month with highs on Saturday near or above freezing!

Maybe a feature about summer would help us to think warm thoughts and hopefully look forward to summer!  The featured chart displays the number of days between the first and last occurance of 90+ degree temperature in Iowa.  2008 comes in as the second shortest season with only 100 days.  Again, 1993 shows up prominently with 2008 in a chart.  Of course, 90 degree temperatures are not in the immediate forecast, but let us hope for any number above freezing!
