| Date : 02 Feb 06:17 AM
| Votes : Good: 19 Bad: 4
+----------------------------------------------
The super part of our weekend was the spectacular weather on Saturday. The featured chart shows the range of high temperatures reported each January day by the ASOS network. Saturday was the only day for the month where the entire state was above freezing! Areas without snow cover enjoyed temperatures in the 50s and lower 60s. The forecast has a brief period of cold weather followed by more warm weather later in this week.

| Date : 03 Feb 06:13 AM
| Votes : Good: 20 Bad: 6
+----------------------------------------------
Wind Chill values are again running well below zero this morning with a good portion of the state under a wind chill advisory. How often are wind chill values this cold? The featured table displays the number of hours exceeding certain temperature thresholds. This winter (shown as 2008) has seen 15 hours of sub -30F, which is at the simple historical average of 15 based on data back to 1973. The brutal winters of 1978 and 1983 are shown as well for comparison.

+----------------------------------------------
The featured chart is a time series of daily high and low temperature percentiles. Based on historical temperatures, a percentile quickly shows the percentage of observations above and below the actual value for the day. It is effectively a way to rank the observation. The exceptional cold around 15 January sticks out in this plot with a repeat period toward the end of the month.

The featured plot is of daily high temperature percentiles from Ames based on data for the past 100 years. The plot provides a colorful look at the climatology of Ames. The black line is the 32°F contour. For February, this contour rapidly decreases, which implies that our chance for having a high temperature above freezing is rapidly increasing. The forecast calls for temperatures above freezing for most of the state and even thunder showers expected next week.

| Title : DCP processing updates
| Date : 11 Feb 09:04 AM
| Author: Daryl Herzmann
| URL : http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/DCP/
+----------------------------------------------
The "DCP" network on the IEM includes many of the river monitoring
stations operated by the USGS and others. While the IEM has been
processing this dataset for a long time, the archive has never
bubbled to the website in full form... until now :)
There is now a download page for this dataset. The download format
may be a bit tricky with one variable name per time per row, but
for now it is the best I can do.
There are two more applications that allow you to view the dataset
on a per day per site -or- per valid time for the entire network
basis.
The archive dates back to 2002, but does have a few holes including
a rather large one during the summer of 2005. As you may know,
finding online archives of this dataset is nearly impossible, but
I will see what can be done to fill in the holes and perhaps backfill
prior to 2002.
The archive updates in real-time as observations are received. As
always, let me know of any suggestions you may have.

High temperatures today are expected to approach record values in the lower 60s. Many locations in the state are getting a head start this morning with temperatures already in the mid 40s and even 50s. The recent warm stretch without heavy rainfall has helped to prevent major flooding concerns at this time. A cold front will sweep the state this evening bringing cooler air for the rest of the week.

The weather on Tuesday was amazing for this time of year with high temperatures in the 50s and 60s. The featured plot is of high temperature percentiles for yesterday showing most of the state at or near record warmth. So the question is when will we have to pay for this warmth in the form of brutally cold weather again? The forecast has a strong snow storm arriving on Friday, but temperatures will not be excessively on the cold side.

| Date : 13 Feb 06:19 AM
| Votes : Good: 22 Bad: 4
+----------------------------------------------
The featured graph is a comparison of snowfall forecasts for Des Moines. The green line is the forecast from the Weather Service last night and the other lines are weather model forecasts from Thursday for today. The models have been trending a bit lower with the snowfall amounts based on some dry air that is expected to cut down on totals. The caveat is that if you hear thunder, snowfall totals could add up very quickly due to enhanced snowfall rates. The features graph was provided by Iowa State grad student Chris Karstens. Check out his website for more details.

The featured image is from the Glidden webcamera at 4:20 PM for three days since the start of winter showing the sun getting higher in the sky. If you were to make a composite image of the sun's location in the sky over the course of a year, you would get a figure 8 shaped analemma. The IEM generated a cheap timelapse from the Glidden cam showing a portion of this pattern.

The featured chart is of daily solar radiation observations and climatology based on 20 years of data from the Ames AgClimate site. The shortest day of the year in December is also about our minimum for amount of energy we receive from the sun. As the days get longer and the sun becomes higher in the sky, the sun's provides more energy to the ground to do things like warm us up! We will need all the help we can get today thanks to cold air funneling into the state on northwest winds. Temperatures are only expected to warm into the 20s.

A new AWOS site has been added to the Iowa network administered
by the Iowa Department of Transportation. This site is located
at the Forest City Airport and has a call sign of KFXY.
Currently, this site has yet to be added to the datastream that
goes to the world via the National Weather Service. So for now,
you can see the data on the IEM :)

| Title : Cold weather begets cold weather
| Date : 23 Feb 06:15 AM
| Votes : Good: 26 Bad: 13
+----------------------------------------------
The featured chart attempts to look at the frequency of having a second day of sub freezing high temperatures after a day below freezing. The red line represents the overall chance of having a below freezing high temperature. This plot would indicate that if a day was below freezing, it is likely (greater than 50% chance) that the next day would be below freezing. A warm up is expected this week before the next winter storm on Thursday.

The IEM started archiving the raw level III nexrad information
from the National Weather Service radars with Iowa coverage in
2002. We have now backfilled this archive to the beginning
thanks to the online archive provided by the National Climatic
Data Center (NCDC).
The files that the IEM archives have slightly different names
than those provided by NCDC in order to directly support the
GEMPAK application. Otherwise, the file format is the same.
The online archive the IEM provides is 582 GB in size!

This morning's IEM delivered road conditions interactive data map shows the northern half of the state at or below freezing for air (numbers) and pavement (circles) temperatures. A good amount of warm air will be streaming into the state today thanks to a passing storm system, so portions of Southern Iowa are expected to reach near 60.
