Harry Hillaker, our State Climatologist, passes along these notes about the month:
We had a statewide average temperature of 68.5 degrees or 2.8 degrees below normal while precipitation totaled 5.90 inches or 1.71 inches above normal. This ranks as the 10th coolest and 14th wettest August among 137 years of state records. There was a statewide average of only one day with daily maximum temperatures of 90 degrees or higher. For the calendar year there have only been a statewide average of five days with highs in the 90's (normal is 23 days). This year also represented the earliest end to 90 degree weather of record. There were no official 90 degree readings after August 14. The previous record earliest end to 90 degree weather came on August 19, 1902.

Rainfall varied widely during the month from only 1.41 inches at Spencer to 14.34 inches at Cedar Rapids Airport.

The summer season (June/July/August) of 2009 averaged 68.5 degrees or 3.1 degrees below normal while precipitation totaled 15.90 inches or 2.83 inches above normal. This ranks as the 4th coolest and 13th wettest summer among 137 years of state records. The only cooler summers were 1915 (66.6), 1992 (67.6) and 2004 (68.1).

The following is a summary of new daily records broken for August and previous months.

The Iowa Department of Transportation have been installing automated cameras at many of their RWIS sites in Iowa and have generously made this dataset available for the public to use. Currently, the RWIS site has a single camera that pans/tilts/zooms around to a number of preset views. These preset views are generated every few minutes and are made available.

For example, here are a set of images from RWIS site near Manchester on US-20:

Various webcam apps that the IEM operates are being reworked to hopefully support this new dataset. There are some complexities involved as a single site has multiple views and the polling interval of the images is not regular (unlike how we are currently doing it with the TV webcam networks)....

Anyway, this dataset should be tremendously useful during winter weather and I look forward to generating some clever interfaces to present this information.
