The IEM's most popular product are the climodat reports, which summarize daily observations from the NWS COOP Network. The climodat reports provide information on a per-site basis. Sometimes, people are interested in an "Iowa Average" or some sort of representative statewide value.

Calculating a statewide value is not straight forward due to a spatially uneven distribution of sites and highly variable observations like precipitation.

The IEM has created an "Iowa Average" site, which is the gridded average of observations available on a daily basis. While not perfect, it should come close to fulfilling the need for this type of information. On the various IEM applications, there is now a site labeled "Iowa Average" with an identifier of IA0000.

The climodat reports include this site as well, but note that since it is a spatial average, you will not see large daily precipitation values nor extreme temperatures. The daily records for this site represent the record statewide average value, so the data is not completely without meaning.

Hopefully this all makes some sense and provides useful information. As an aside, via the gridding technique the statewide precip in Iowa was 43.14 inches in 2008 while the spatially unweighted average was 43.66 inches based on roughly 1 station per county. > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2009-04-20 | Title : Dry start to spring | Date : 20 Apr 06:14 AM | Votes : Good: 22 Bad: 4 +---------------------------------------------- The featured chart is of daily statewide rainfall estimates since March 1st showing a number of dry days. IEMBot messages are now being syndicated onto Twitter. This feature has been working for a while, but just recently I got a message rate restriction lifted and now IEMBot can speak his mind via the 122 children he now has. One child per NWS Forecast Office!

The relevant IEMBot's for local Iowa offices include:

In general, the twitter user is iembot_xxx, where xxx is the call letters of the local NWS office. You can find your office's call letters here.

Thanks to the excellent libraries IEMBot is written with, this took a mere 7 lines of code to implement! The messages delivered to twitter could use some formatting help and that will be improved in the coming weeks as I get feedback and play time allows :) > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2009-04-24 | Title : A few missed out | Date : 24 Apr 06:13 AM | Votes : Good: 17 Bad: 4 +---------------------------------------------- The featured map is an analyis of high temperature percentile for Thursday showing a good chunk of the state above the 90th percentile.
