been uploaded to the IEM data coffers.  This information is 
provided by the National Climatic Data Center, but is in a
difficult format to parse and use with almost no documentation.
I try my best to sometimes guess at how the data is to be converted,

NOAA's <a href="http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/wwd/winter_wx.shtml">HPC</a> has lucky portions of Iowa analyzed with a good chance to get heavy snowfall this weekend.  The featured image shows the forecasts for Saturday and then Sunday. The center of the storm system will track just to our south, which often places Iowa in a favored position to get snow.  The big question remains on how much of it will fall as snowfall total robbing rain!

A strong storm system brought wet snowfall to Iowa on Sunday with selected totals over 5 inches shown.  The good news is that the snow will not stick around long as any sunshine this time of year will quickly melt it.  Soil temperatures are warm as well. The featured image is yesterday afternoon visible satellite imagery and high temperatures.  The snow field left from Sunday's storm was a mere county or two wide.  The effect of this snow cover can easily be seen with high temperatures warmer on both sides of the snowpack.  If you click on the image, there are low clouds shown over Southern Iowa.

The featured graph is a time series of water mixing ratio (a measure of the amount of water in the air) for two sites in Iowa on Tuesday.  Iowa Falls experienced snow melt, while Charles City had no snow cover.  Melting snow humidifies the air as it changes from a solid to liquid and/or gas.  The remaining snow is expected to melt today before our next storm system arrives bringing just rain this time.

The featured graph and images are from the Ames SchoolNet Site and Webcamera.  The time series is of instantaneous solar radiation sampled every minute.  Notice how the curve transitions from smooth to choppy in the afternoon and then smooth again just before sunset.  The shape of this curve tells the story shown in the featured 3 webcam images, a transition from clear skies to party clooudy to mostly clear at sunset.  The solar radiation curve becomes choppy as the sun plays peekaboo with the clouds as opposed to being a pure function of location in the sky during optically clear situations.

The featured chart is the percentage of days per month that experience either high or low temperatures at least 1 degree warmer than the previous day.  April has the largest value for high temperature, but is just a mere few percentage points larger than October which only equates to approximately 1 more day per month.  This chart would imply that climatology does not have a strong influence on actually seeing our day to day temperatures warm.  Day to day temperatures are more strongly influenced by the passage of air masses.

All in all, the weather for Easter weekend was pleasant for this time of year with highs in the 50s and 60s.  Clouds streamed in on Sunday holding temps in the 50s as shown in the featured image.  Monday morning has started off wet with more chances of rain expected this week.

A large storm system to our south on Monday brought rain and snow showers to Iowa.  A considerable amount of dry air had to be saturated in order for the rain and snow to reach the ground.  The featured graph is of 5 minute NEXRAD base reflectivity and temperature timeseries for Ames.  The initial difference between the temperature and dew point begins to narrow once the shower passes overhead.  The dew point increases as the air saturates and the temperature decreases as evaporation occurs.

Temperatures on Tuesday were wonderful with values near average for this time of the year.  Outside of a few cold days on the 5th-7th with the snow storm, our weather has departed much from what we would expect for this time of year.  The forecast continues Tuesday's trend with rain arriving for the weekend.

The quality controlled NWS COOP data for December has been
uploaded to the IEM.  The climodat reports updated as well.
Harry Hillaker, our State Climatologist, passes along these
notes about December:

 - The December statewide average temperature was 17.5 deg or
   5.1 deg below normal.
 - December precip averaged 2 inches or 0.77 above normal.
 - December snowfall averaged 16.3 inches or 9 inches above norm.
 - This ranks as the 17th coldest and 18th wettest
   December among 136 years of records.   Snowfall ranks 
   fourth greatest among 122 years of records.   The last 
   snowier month came in December 2000. December 2008 ties for 
   15th snowiest of any calendar month.

and for the year:

For the year as a whole temperatures averaged 45.8 degrees or 
2.0 degrees below normal while precipitation averaged 43.79 
inches or 9.71 inches above normal.   Snowfall averaged 49.3 
inches or 16.9 inches above normal.   This ranks as the 11th 
coolest and 4th wettest year among 136 years of records. 
Snowfall ties for the fourth greatest annual total among 
121 years of records.   The last cooler year was 1996, the 
last wetter year in 1993 and the last snowier year was 1997.   
Annual precipitation totals varied from only 25.90 inches at 
Spirit Lake to a whopping 60.47 inches at Allerton. Only 4 of 
152 locations with long-term normals recorded less than the usual 
amount of precipitation.   There were 37 of 162 locations 
recording more than 50 inches of precipitation.

New daily records broken for the month based on data back to 1951.

<p>The IEM's most popular product are the climodat reports, which
summarize daily observations from the NWS COOP Network.  The climodat
reports provide information on a per-site basis.  Sometimes, people
are interested in an "Iowa Average" or some sort of representative
statewide value.

<p>Calculating a statewide value is not straight forward due to a
spatially uneven distribution of sites and highly variable
observations like precipitation.

<p>The IEM has created an "Iowa Average" site, which is the gridded
average of observations available on a daily basis.  While not
perfect, it should come close to fulfilling the need for this type of
information.  On the various IEM applications, there is now a site
labeled "Iowa Average" with an identifier of IA0000.

<p>The climodat reports include this site as well, but note that since
it is a spatial average, you will not see large daily precipitation
values nor extreme temperatures.  The daily records for this site
represent the record statewide average value, so the data is not
completely without meaning.

<p>Hopefully this all makes some sense and provides useful
information.  As an aside, via the gridding technique the statewide
precip in Iowa was 43.14 inches in 2008 while the spatially unweighted
average was 43.66 inches based on roughly 1 station per county.

The featured chart is of daily statewide rainfall estimates since March 1<sup>st</sup> showing a number of dry days.  The forecast for this week keeps us mostly dry as well with only limited chances of storms on Wednesday evening.  Temperatures will remain warm, which will help to warm soils to levels necessary to plant corn.

The featured map is an analyis of high temperature percentile for Thursday showing a good chunk of the state above the 90th percentile.  A somewhat small storm complex brought clouds and showers to parts of Southern Iowa keeping their temperatures some 10-20 degrees cooler than the rest of the state.  Extreme Northwest Iowa set record high temperatures in the low 90s!  Today will be another warm day with severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon and into the weekend.
