Hurricane Gustav is very close to making landfall this Labor Day morning along the Lousiana coast.  This system is expected to slow down and produce large amounts of rainfall.  Eventually, this system will work north and bring some rain to Iowa.

Little did we know at the time that May, June, and July would be very wet months as shown in today's featured plot.  August turned out to be very dry with rainfall totals some 8 to 9 inches below what was received back in August 2007.

Air temperatures have fallen from near 90 on Monday to 45 this Wednesday morning in Spencer thanks to a cold front that has swept the state clean of muggy air for now.  The featured plot shows that your location made a big difference for high temperature on Tuesday as the cold front slowly worked from west to east.

The <a href="http://drought.unl.edu/dm/monitor.html">US Drought Monitor</a> has an area of abnormally dry and moderate drought analyzed in Western Iowa.  This area has mostly missed the rainfall events in the past few months and is starting to show some agricultural impacts.  The remants of Hurricane Gustav are providing rainfall in Eastern Iowa this morning and will slowly push off to the east.

The featured plot is of air, pavement, and sub-surface temperatures from the Ames RWIS site.  The black line is the sub-surface temperature, which you may note has been much warmer than actual air temperature (red line).  The net effect in the past 2 days is for a cool off of around 10 degrees.  Another interesting thing to note is how much warmer the pavement temperatures are than the air temperature.

The featured chart is a temperature composite of the time period before and after the first sub 32 degree temperature in the fall from the Des Moines Airport.  The three lines represent the temperature range and average of the observations 3 days before thru 1 day after the event.  The 12 hours before the first event show a rapid cooling which is often the case with clear skies during the night time hours.  Those clear skies are then typically around for the next day when temperatures quickly recover.

With all of the focus on Hurricane Gustav and Ike, it was the remnants a pacific ocean tropical storm named <a href="http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2008/LOWELL.shtml">Lowell</a> that contributed to a significant rainfall event over the MidWest this weekend. The featured rainfall estimates are for a 7 day period ending Sunday morning.  Some locations in Southeast Iowa are over 10 inches of rainfall for the month.

The featured chart is of observed daily solar radiation and average 4 inch depth soil temperatures for September from the Ames ISUAG site.  Monday was finally a sunny day as indicated by the much higher radiation values as compared with the past 5 days.  More sun is in the forecast with temperatures warming back to 80 degrees!

The last day that a record high temperature was set anywhere in Iowa was 29 January 2008, which makes for a streak of around 232 days.  The featured chart looks at the longest period in the Iowa climate data without a record high set anywhere in the state.  As with other charts we have featured this year, 1993 shows up promiently.  The forecast does not fortell any immediate chances of record warmth, so our streak will continue.

A kind IEM data user discovered that our archive of ISU
Ag Climate network data was missing hourly observations for

The Storm Prediction Center has Northwest Iowa outlined in a slight risk for severe weather today with the passage of a cold front.  It has been a while since Iowa has experienced severe weather, which nobody will mourn over after our wild and rough spring/summer. Growing degree days this growing season have been running a bit short.  The featured chart shows how May, August, and September are contributing to the approximate 200 unit deficit.  Our recent warm stretch has helped to make up some of this deficit, but the question remains how useful this heat is to crops that are nearly mature.
