While it will be close, the average temperature for September for Ames appears to be slightly below normal which makes for the 11th straight month. Other locations in Iowa may come in slightly above normal for the month, such as Des Moines. The forecast looks to be great for the beginning of October with highs creeping back toward 70.

The featured graph is of high temperatures for Des Moines during September with departures from normal conveniently colored in red (warmer) and blue (cooler). The chart shows that there was a cooler half and a warmer half of the month with some of the departures in the 10-20 degree range. This makes for a strange feeling now with the calendar saying October and our recent stretch of warm weather reminding us of August.

Temperatures dipped into the mid 30s over Northern Iowa this morning with some low lying areas probably experiencing some frost. The calendar says October now, so frost is certainly expected this time of year. Frost would be helpful to help kill the crops off and allow them to dry down before harvest.

For instance, the chance (observational frequency) of a sub-33 temperature by this time of year is roughly 50%. This means half of the years prior to this one have seen a sub-33 temperature by October 4th.

A frontal boundary is helping to maintain an area of showers over Iowa this fine Tuesday morning with some select locales expected to pick up around an inch of rainfall. How common is it to get an inch of rain in one day in October? The featured graph shows the frequency of getting an inch plus rainfall observeration somewhere in the state based on the past 57 years of data. Values for October are around 20%, which would roughly be once every 5 years on a daily basis.

The featured box and whisker plot shows the distribution of rainfall chances for days after an initial rainy day followed by a dry day (if shown, day 1 would appear as 0 on this chart). The plot is an attempt to answer the question of how long to wait for the next rainfall after an event. Day 2 appears to stand out as a drier day than the rest with no clear signal for the rest of the days. So it rained on Tuesday and was dry on Wednesday, so we can expect today to probably be dry as well. In reality, our rainfall chances appear to hold off until this weekend.

There many techniques that can used to generate a weather forecast for high temperatures. The errors associated with two of these techniques are shown in the featured chart. A "persistence" forecast is simply saying that today's high temperature will be tomorrows and then the next day and ... One version of a "climate" forecast is simply saying that the high temperature will be the average high temperature for the given day. Averaged over a year, the climate forecast will have nearly the same daily error, since it is a measure of the spread of the variability. The persistence forecast gets progressively worse over time as weather and climate effects change the local conditions. Note that the persistence forecast is better for day 2 and close for day 3. Also note that the persistence forecast for day 1 is zero, since the persistence forecast for today is the observation for today.

A plot of temperatures this month shows a bunch of very comfortable days with highs in the 70s and lows slowly creeping higher with the return of moisture ahead of a storm system that will bring rain to Iowa today. High temperatures on the other side of this system will only be in the 50s on Tuesday, but back in the 60s for the rest of the week.

While the stock market was tanking last week, our temperatures were nicely rising to the upper 70s. This week has seen a reversal in the stock market and our temperatures with the passage of a cold front. Highs will only be in the 50s this week. Maybe the government can come up with a bailout plan to raise temperatures again :)

For those of you who process the METAR formatted observations
from the IEM: I have made some changes...
1) All schoolnet sites now begin with a 'S' 4 character
identifier, this is to hopefully prevent ID pollution
with other valid networks/countries.
2) The GEMPAK station tables have been updated at the URL
above. They are both current and complete, I hope!
3) Fixed a few bugs with the METAR generating code. Should
have fewer formatting errors...

This is based on observations from Ames since 1893. For example, for October the first 10 days are the warmest for roughly 70% of the years. This will appear to be the case for us this year. This chart also shows interesting asymmetry during the spring and fall months.

One of the more popular applications on the IEM is the
VTEC Product Browser, which provides a handy (I hope!) interface
to view current and historical products issued by the National
Weather Service with VTEC encoding. These products include
Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado warnings.
The current interface is very clunky and slow! Some folks were
rightly complaining about how long it takes for the page to load
and how ugly the interface is. So, I tried to do something about
it. I rewrote the application and made it nearly 100% AJAX based,
with asynchronos content loading. There are some bugs yet, but I
wanted to get this out for folks to test with.
In general, the content presentation is the same. Once nice addition
is the support of very short URLs. This makes including links in
emails and whatnot much easier. For example, here is a valid URL:

the previous URLs were 3 times that long :(
So play with it and let me know what you think. Once I get some
more bugs squashed, I'll have it be default for various applications

Clear skies, calm winds, high pressure, and a full moon all conspired to bring us our first widespread frost of the season. The Southeast corner of the state was spared for now with their lows only dipping into the mid 30s. This first frost was later than we would expect, which was a good thing for late maturing crops.

The featured plot is from the Humbolt SchoolNet for Thursday morning showing the flat lining in temperature around freezing before more cooling occurs just before sunrise. You will often see this as special processes occur when water begins to freeze, which releases heat and therefore slows the cooling process some. Having the dew point near 32 degrees gives an indication that frost formation was a necessary process for the temperature to cool below freezing.

The quality controlled data for June from the Iowa COOP network
has been uploaded to the IEM. The state climatologist, Harry
Hillaker, also passes along this note about the rainfall in
June:
The final statewide average precipitation for June came out as
9.01 inches. This was the second highest June total among 136
years of record and sixth highest for any month. The only
wetter months are:

3. August 2007 9.78

The new daily records broken for the month are included below.
Note the lack of record high temperatures again. This streak

The featured map is of peak wind gust observed on Sunday with much of the state above 50 miles per hour. Higher wind gusts were reported nearing 70 mph causing lots of tree and powerline damage. Afternoon high temperatures were only in the 40s, which made for a bitter early taste of winter in late October. Snow flurries were also reported with some locations picking up a measurable dusting. Winds will be lighter today, but still in the 30-40 mph range.
