This is often associated with air mass changes with a steady feed of colder air during the day. Another interesting feature is the shift of high temperature shown between Feb/Mar and Oct/Nov. This is due to the change of daylight savings time. The hourly time axis on the plot is in local (standard/daylight) time depending on the time of year. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 17 Nov 2008 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Wed Nov 19 11:01:04 2008 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (Iowa Mesonet) Date: Wed Nov 19 11:01:07 2008 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200811191701.mAJH14nN032750@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 18 November 2008 > News +---------------------------------------------- | Title : Road Condition KML | Date : 18 Nov 01:46 PM | Author: Daryl Herzmann | URL : http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/kml/roadcond.php +---------------------------------------------- The referenced link provides a KML formatted file with the Iowa Winter Road conditions included. Low temperatures tend to occur just after sunrise when net radiation finally becomes positive (downward). This chart shows this trend with lows happening earlier in the morning during the summer. You can also see a secondary maximum around 11 PM, which is often the case when clear skies at night follow a cloudy day allowing temperatures to drop rapidly below levels during the cloudy morning. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 18 Nov 2008 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Thu Nov 20 11:01:04 2008 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (Iowa Mesonet) Date: Thu Nov 20 11:01:08 2008 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200811201701.mAKH14pC009530@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 19 November 2008 > News No news is good news > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2008-11-19 | Title : When does the max dewpoint occur? | Date : 19 Nov 06:09 AM | Votes : Good: 26 Bad: 6 +---------------------------------------------- Continuing with the series of climate features, today a plot of when the highest dew point temperature for the local day occurs. First off, let us start by saying that dew points are much less diurnal in nature than air temperature and outside of sensor bias, dew point is not a function of air temperature. The featured plot shows two obvious extremes around midnight, this is due to air mass advection bringing in more or less moist air during most of the 24 hour period (excuse brevity of explanation please). Today's feature is a simple hourly climatology of the average relative humidity observed at Des Moines. This plot shows a strong annual and diurnal signal! While dew point temperature is not a function of air temperature, relative humidity is! While the atmosphere cools during the night, relative humidities rise (air temperature drops, dew point remains nearly constant). This plot also shows the least humid time of year being in April, when temperatures are warming nicely and vegetation is not transpiring yet. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 20 Nov 2008 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Sat Nov 22 11:01:04 2008 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (Iowa Mesonet) Date: Sat Nov 22 11:01:07 2008 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200811221701.mAMH14xs025953@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 21 November 2008 > News No news is good news > Yesterday's Daily Feature +---------------------------------------------- http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/onsite/features/cat.php?day=2008-11-21 | Title : Single digit lows | Date : 21 Nov 08:28 AM | Votes : Good: 23 Bad: 7 +---------------------------------------------- The coldest air so far this year visited Iowa this Friday morning with low temperatures in the single digits common for most of the state. Anyway, the state climatologist, Harry Hillaker, has kindly provided the IEM with his QCs snowfall depth data back to 1991. The National Climatic Data Center has snowfall depth data prior to 1991, but there are many data voids in the dataset. So going forward, the IEM will be including snow depth data in the monthly processing and it will be available on the COOP download page linked on this news item. > Yesterday's Daily Feature No feature posted. > NWS Watch/Warning Summary *** Products issued on 23 Nov 2008 Summary +_________ By WFO ____________+ Watches Type US IA | ARX DVN DMX OAX FSD | US Tornado 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Svr Tstorm 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | 0 Fl Flood 0 0 | 0 0 0 0 0 | N/A ARX = LaCrosse, WI DVN = Davenport, IA DMX = Des Moines, IA OAX = Omaha, NE FSD = Sioux Falls, SD From mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu Tue Nov 25 11:01:04 2008 From: mesonet at mesonet.agron.iastate.edu (Iowa Mesonet) Date: Tue Nov 25 11:01:08 2008 Subject: IEM Daily Bulletin Message-ID: <200811251701.mAPH1465020522@mesonet.agron.iastate.edu> Iowa Environmental Mesonet Daily Bulletin Data valid for 24 November 2008 > News +---------------------------------------------- | Title : Illinois RWIS added | Date : 25 Nov 08:27 AM | Author: Daryl Herzmann | URL : http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/RWIS/current.phtml?network=IL_RWIS +---------------------------------------------- Thanks to the Clarus System (www.clarus-system.com), I have added the Illinois RWIS network to the IEM data ingest.
