| Date : 01 May 08:07 AM
| Votes : Good: 26 Bad: 4
+----------------------------------------------
The Storm Prediction Center has a moderate risk of severe weather forecasted just south of Iowa today with most of the state in a slight risk. The primary threat of large hail will arrive late this afternoon and evening, but tornados are possible with a very dynamic storm system developing to our west. The tornado threat on Friday looks to be a bit more significant for folks in Eastern Iowa as this slow moving storm system passes thru.

+----------------------------------------------
A chilly start on Sunday was quickly erased by bright sunshine and warm southwesterly winds. Temperatures recovered about 30 degrees, which is about what can be expected this time of year. The featured histogram is of observed difference between low and high temperature on 4 May including all sites in Iowa. The average is around 23 degrees. For Monday, we have a slighly warmer start with temperatures in the upper 40s, so adding 30 degrees to that will put us near 80!

| Date : 06 May 12:01 AM
| Votes : Good: 18 Bad: 11
+----------------------------------------------
The featured map is of soil water content estimates from the Iowa Daily Erosion Project for a layer of soil just below the surface (4-8 inches). Values around 40mm (40% by volume) indicate saturation, which is when the soil has most of its air space filled up with water. This layer presents a difficult problem for Iowa farmers as the immediate top surface has dried out in the past few days thanks to warmer weather and dry air. This deeper layer just below the surface takes a bit longer to dry out and is where tillage equipment needs to work thru. Unfortunately, more rain is on the way today with chances of heavy rain extending into Thursday.

| Date : 14 May 07:16 AM
| Votes : Good: 20 Bad: 7
+----------------------------------------------
While there are more scientificly rigorous ways to illustrate this, a simple plot of surface air pressure for this year and last shows wider variability this year and lower values for surface low pressure systems. You can think of this plot as a measure of storm strength and frequency with each dip representing a storm system passage. The forecast calls for a stretch of higher pressure, which is usually a sign of sinking air and thus less chance of precipitation.

The featured table is an attempt to illustrate how we have not seen many warm days so far this year. The left hand side is a simple count of the number of days with a high temperature 10+ degrees above normal. The right hand side is the maximum difference of the actual high temperature against the normal for the day. The forecast calls for warmer weather, but only in the mid 70s, which is about normal.

+----------------------------------------------
Finally a stretch of mostly dry weather to help Iowa's farmers get the crops planted. The weather has been a rough time this spring and the calendar says mid May, which is high time to have the crops planted. For those of us non-farmers, get outside and enjoy it! The really hot and muggy weather may only be a few weeks away.

Caught this timelapse from the Creston webcamera. This lapse
is a little bit jumpy in time for some reason, but regardless
it is a tremendous illustration of how a supercell will often
split in sheered environments. The lapse shows the initial
updraft eventually splitting into two near the middle of it.
I do not think I have seen a similar time lapse like it before!
The Youtube version is linked in this news item.

The official NWS rating for the Parkersburg tornado is EF5. This places the tornado in the top-most category. This rating is based on a survey of the damage compared against a series of damage indicators. This tornado is the strongest Iowa has seen in 32 years. Let us hope it will be at least another 32 years before seeing another this strong.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a high risk of severe weather for Thursday. The atmosphere over Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa will be primed for a severe weather outbreak with large amounts of instability juxtaposed over strong wind sheer (which helps the thunderstorms to rotate). The particularly dangerous aspect of this setup is that the tornado threat is expected to continue after sunset along with a good chance of a widespread damaging wind event. Just what we did not want to see.
