March appears to be coming in like a lamb according to the graphical forecast for Saturday on the NWS website. Highs will be moderated some by all of the snow melting that will be occuring. Could this be a start of the end of winter?!

The featured chart is of recent air temperatures and wind chill values from the Des Moines Airport. Sunday afternoon saw an impressive push of warm air into the state with highs reaching the 50s to even 70. A strong cold front then swept the state clean of this warm air late Sunday afternoon. Wind chill temperatures are now some 60 degrees colder in a period of less than one day.

Visibile satellite imagery from late in the afternoon on Monday nicely shows the snow that has been covering our landscape for the past 3 months. There are some locations in the state without snowcover and you can see those areas in black. Looping the visible satellite imagery on warm and sunny days will often show the snow field contracting. Let us hope for a lot of that!

The featured chart is of high temperatures for the first 5 days of March for recent years at Ames. Temperatures could be in the 60s and also in the teens. Unfortunately, our experience will be on the cold end of the spectrum for the next few days thanks to yet another shot of cold air from Canada. Not much can be done about the weather other than complain about it.

If winter is going to continue at this brutal pace, we might as well break some records to make it worth while. This morning, yet another push of cold air made it into the state with temperature dropping to double digits below zero in NW Iowa. This would be very close to record lows. The forecast has a warming trend with highs next week above freezing! Wow!

| Date : 10 Mar 07:17 AM
| Votes : Good: 16 Bad: 10
+----------------------------------------------
The forecast for this week brings a very welcome stretch of warmer weather. The only problem is the potential for river flooding as the snow melts over a frozen ground, which gives it few options other than run into the nearest river. Unfortunately, the long term weather models continue to indicate a rather potent winter storm for this coming weekend, but let us enjoy the warmer weather first!

| Date : 12 Mar 07:38 AM
| Votes : Good: 19 Bad: 8
+----------------------------------------------
The featured map is a high temperature analysis for Tuesday showing much of the state in the 50s while Northeast Iowa was stuck in the 40s and upper 30s. Of course, the snowpack is to blame with deep and heavy snowpack still existing in that part of the state. It will take a number of days like Tuesday to melt the 2-3 inches of frozen water on the ground. The longer this process takes the better, since the water can have time to run off.

| Date : 13 Mar 07:20 AM
| Votes : Good: 23 Bad: 5
+----------------------------------------------
Our recent warm up has helped warm near surface soil temperatures to above freezing where the snow has been melted away. This is a good thing! As the soil warms, our air temperatures will creep higher as well. The ground still has a considerable amount of frost in it, so it will take a while to get it out. It is all a part of the transition to spring, which finally feels possible!

The featured timeseries chart is from the USDA-ARS-NSTL flux site showing recent near surface soil temperatures, in metric units even! This plot nicely illustrates the process of thawing, where soil temperatures approach the freezing but take a while to warm above freezing as it takes extra heating to change water phase. Once above freezing, you can see the nice response to solar input on the 12th with temperatures above freezing.

ISU Ag Farm webcam shows a new blanket of white instead of the tradiational green for this day. A powerful storm is cranking up this morning over the plains and we will see more chances of rain and snow today before a quick warm up tomorrow. Only a few more days left until spring!

Curious about the news title? IEM Cow is an online program that
does National Weather Service Storm Based Warning verification
based on Local Storm Reports.
IEM Cow grazes on the real time products the NWS puts out and
produces unofficial verification statistics as its milk. With
commodity prices at record levels, I needed to find a new food
source for it. So now IEM Cow will process Flash Flood Warnings
(FFW) issued in 2008.

March is one of the more variable months in Iowa for temperature. The featured map shows record high and low temperatures with some locations well above a 90 degree difference. Thankfully, we are going to be on the higher end of the temperature spectrum for now, but chances of rain and snow are on the way for this weekend.

IEM Freeze is indicating the bad news this morning with air temperatures (numbers) and pavement temperatures (dots) near or below freezing with sleet and snow being reported. Iowa Road Conditions are indicating slick road conditions this morning as well. Snow does not have much chance of sticking around long this time of year as any sunshine will quickly melt it.

The featured chart is the frequency of 1+ inch snowfall observations for some location in Iowa. For a day in late March, about 1 in every 3 years has a recorded snowfall. The chance of a snowfall drops off rapidly in April, but it still can happen! Knowing this winter, it will probably snow all April as well.
