The featured hydrograph was taken from the <a href="http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=dmx&gage=aesi4&view=1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1">NWS website</a> showing the South Skunk river coming within a foot of setting a record stage. The current river stage is back below flooding levels, but more heavy rainfall is expected this week.  Soils are currently saturated and rainfall will quickly runoff causing flooding once again.

The featured map is modelled soil moisture in a layer just below the ground surface.  Most of the state is analyzed in the 40-50% range, which is saturated.  This layer effectively prevents most of the rain water from seeping into the ground leading to efficient runoff or standing water.  This situation will only get worse this week with numerous chances of heavy rainfall in the forecast including an ongoing event this morning.

The featured chart is of areal averaged statewide precipitation estimates since the first of April.  The last 14 days have been wet with approximately an inch of rain falling on 3 of those days.  The chart nicely shows the 7 days of dry weather in May during which much of the state's corn and soy crop was planted.  More rain is expected today, tomorrow, the day after that, and then two days after that....

The <a href="http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day1otlk.html">Storm Prediction Center</a> has a very large high risk of severe weather for today.  The atmospheric setup has many of the severe weather indices pegged with extreme amounts of wind shear and instability present.  Perhaps the most concerning threat is the flooding potential with any additional rain producing flooding.  Needless to say, the active weather pattern continues.

Heavy rain fell once again over Iowa last night with the Des Moines metro particularly hit hard.  The featured map of CoCoRaHS observations this Friday morning shows 2+ inches common with some locations over 3 inches.  The Des Moines Airport picked up over 4 inches!  Unfortunately, many chances of rain are in the forecast with more severe weather expected this weekend.

The featured map is of predicted rainfall from the NAM model for a period ending Thursday evening. A good portion of Iowa is predicted to receive 1-3 inches with isolated areas approaching 5 inches.  It is hard to imagine what this rainfall may do to area rivers which are already well above flood stage. And again, this round of rainfall will be accompanied by severe weather in all forms.

CoCoRaHS rainfall reports this morning show yet another 3 inch rainfall falling in the local river basins here in Ames.  It is safe to assume that nearly all of this water is currently running off and going downstream into Ames!  Record or near record flooding continues, but there is some hope that our weather is going to straighten out for the next few days.

The featured map is a summary of current forecasted flooding impacts.  A good portion of this map is or will be experiencing major flooding with river levels at or above 1993.  The immediate impacts are to property along the rivers and closed roads due to washouts or water over the road.  Another major impact is currently playing out in Iowa's water logged fields with the corn and soy crops not fully planted and well behind on growth.  The crops need to see the bright sunshine and so do many of us.

For the past 3 weeks, Iowa has experienced severe weather most every day with 80 some warnings issued on two of those days.  This has been a particularly dangerous situation with many folks outside working on cleanup from the tornados or dealing with the floods.  The good news is that the forecast is calling for very quiet weather this week with an area of high pressure taking control.

This week has seen drier air work into the state which has helped to keep storms from developing over the state providing a much needed break from the rain.  This drier air mass is courtesy of a large high pressure system that is drifting to the east today. More humid air will return along with chances of storms, but the overall threat for heavy rainfall appears to be limited.

The featured graph is of recent river flow observations from the Squaw Creek in Ames showing in cubic feet per second (cfs).  The creek and basin are on the small side, so flooding tends to happen quickly and not last long.  The recent stretch of dry weather has been helpful to allow the creek to receed to levels well within bankful.

Major impact flooding continues along the major rivers in our area.  Unlike the small Squaw Creek in Ames, these rivers have a long response time.  Unfortunately, thunderstorms are expected to fire this afternoon and again this weekend.

Our recent stretch of weather has been mostly dry and just a bit on the cool side of normal.  The problem is that the crops could use heat to really warm up the ground and help to speed growth.  More heat though implies more humidity due to plant transpiration  and probably more chances of rain, which the flooded out areas certainly do not need. So what should we hope for?
