+----------------------------------------------
The IEM has been happily collecting a massive archive of
images and movies from the KCCI-TV SchoolNet8 and KELO-TV
WeatherNet webcam networks since the year 2003! During that
time, the webcams have captured a large number of interesting
phenomena illustrating science concepts. These lapses are
used in science classrooms throughout the world!
Since May 2007, I have been uploading the best time lapses to
YouTube to widely promote their use. The now famous "Gravity
Wave" lapse from Tama has nearly 440,000 views!
These past few days, I have been combing over the 30 some DVDs
of archived special webcam time lapses to upload the best
lapses to YouTube as well. The result is nearly 100 videos
now on YouTube for you to view and put to use!
With these videos uploaded, the plan is to now write some
blurbs on what some of these lapses are illustrating.
If you like them, subscribe to the RSS feed or to the YouTube
feed to be alerted when new videos are uploaded in the future.
What will we capture in 2008? :)

| Votes : Good: 9 Bad: 4
+----------------------------------------------
The featured chart is of daily high temperature departures from normal for Ames this month showing most of December below normal save a brief stretch a few weeks ago. The abundant snow cover for the entire month certainly helped to keep temperatures down. A very cold start is forecasted for 2008, but some warming is expected by the end of this week if we can avoid daytime fog each day.

The featured map is estimated rainfall totals for 2007 based on NWS NEXRAD estimates. While the values may be somewhat over estimated, the story for 2007 was the extreme amounts of rainfall many parts of the state experienced with some locations over 4 feet of water! Much of this rain fell during the months of August and October, which for both months set many records for daily and monthly totals. The only portion of the state that missed out was the extreme Northwest corner. Will we see a repeat in 2008?

+----------------------------------------------
Many moons ago (well December 2005), I set up the IEM web farm
to handle the increasing web load. Ignorantly at the time, I
set this system up in a way that conflicts with users at Iowa
State who use the Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. The
result was that they couldn't access the website while working
remotely.
Last weekend, I modified the IEM setup to use a network subnet
that doesn't conflict with the VPN. The result is that VPN
access works! :)

| Date : 02 Jan 07:11 AM
| Votes : Good: 12 Bad: 2
+----------------------------------------------
As rated by the IEM, the #2 weather event for 2007 was the extreme cold that visited the state in early April. The featured chart is from Lamoni showing temperates well below normal and well below freezing. Unfortunately, this caused major damage to the alfalfa and fruit crops who got an early start to the growing season thanks to mild weather previous to this period. For the period of April 4-15, average statewide temperatures (34.2 °F) were 2 degrees colder than any other year in our climate record since 1893. Temperatures quickly recovered after this period and frost was not seen again during the spring.

| Date : 03 Jan 07:35 AM
| Votes : Good: 20 Bad: 3
+----------------------------------------------
As rated by the IEM, the #3 weather event for 2007 was the series of winter storms that impacted the state in late Febuary and early March. The first brought a crippling ice storm and extreme snowfall amounts approaching 20 inches in Cresco. The second was a full blown blizzard shutting down the interstates in Northern and Western Iowa. Strong winds blew in both storms helping to bring down ice loaded power transmission lines. The featured image is a webcam show from the ISU Ag Farm showing a tractor and a backhoe up to its wheels in snow. The drift in front of this building was 9 feet high!

The end of the caucus season has brought warmer temperatures to the forecast with highs on Friday and into this weekend expected to be just above freezing (any coincidence?). | Title : VTEC Product Browser
| Date : 11 Jan 12:57 AM
| Author: Daryl Herzmann
| URL : http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/GIS/apps/rview/warnings_cat.phtml
+----------------------------------------------
The National Weather Service uses a coding system called VTEC
(Valid Time Extent Code) to track watch, warnings, etc. This
system provides a great deal of order to a chaotic flurry of
products the NWS produces.
The IEM has processing this data feed since its implementation
and has a fairly complete archive build up! In fact, I am not
aware of an accessible online archive of these products. Anyway,
for the past 2 years an application called the "VTEC Product
Browser" has provided an interface to this archive. This
application is also "Live" with no delays to newly issued
products being available.
Anyway, it was about time to add some bells and whistles to this
application and hopefully no new bugs! :) These features include:
- The interface is based on ExtJS.com , which is a very nice
library providing AJAX/Web 2.0 controls. The only issue is
that this requires a "modern" browser. An analysis of IEM
web traffic shows 97% of visitors meeting this requirement.
- The default view of NEXRAD + Storm Reports + Watch/Warnings
is now "live" during the event. Previously, it would only
show data at issuance of the product time.
- The raw text product is presented in clickable tabs, with the
most recent product updating appearing first. This was a
very popular feature request.
- Another series of tabs provides the following datasets:
+ "Severe Reports within Polygon" is active for warnings with
polygons (storm based warnings). Any LSRs listed there are
both inside the polygon spatially and temporally.
+ "All Storm Reports within Time Period" lists out reports
from the local forecast office for their entire area. No
comparison is currently done between these reports and the
warning (long story why...) Anyway, this is very useful for
winter weather products, etc...
+ "Geography Included" lists out the counties and zones impacted
by the product. It also includes the product status for each
area. Products can be extended/expanded/contracted and
hopefully this helps keep track of it.
+ "Other Events" lists out other instances of the same product
for the local year and local office. This is very handy to
help find other events. The area of the product is also
shown. For storm based warnings, the polygon size is shown.
You can also "search" the Locations column, by clicking on its
arrow and going down to filter. For example, you could enter
the county name and get a filtered list of products for that
county.
- The tab load asynchronosly and on-demand, to help keep initial
page load very speedy.
- All of the tables are sortable without page reload.
- JSON interfaces are publicly available that drive the various
tabs. (geek talk)
What is amazing about this app was how easy and little time it took
me to implement. ExtJS is amazingly simple and powerful.
So, what bugs did I just produce, please let me know!

The featured chart shows that this winter (since 1 Dec) has more that its fair share of days with high temperatures below freezing. For the same period last year, we had the fewest number of days versus any year on record for Ames. The forecast is cold with highs today only in the teens and not above freezing for the next week!

+----------------------------------------------
The Hydrometeorological Prediction Center has parts of Iowa depicted in a slight risk for greater than 4 inches of snowfall accumulation today into Thursday morning. The interesting part of this storm system is that snowfall ratios look to be on the high side, which means a little bit of actual moisture can make a lot of fluffy snow. If ratios turn out to be high, some locations could get over 8 inches of snow!

The feature for Thursday generated some interest, so I have
placed the script that generates the plot on the IEM. You can
pick which site in Iowa you want to display and optionally
compare it to another site. I will add more options for picking
which season/month and perhaps doing the same for high temperatures
as well, if there is interest.

| Date : 17 Jan 06:27 AM
| Votes : Good: 26 Bad: 3
+----------------------------------------------
The big story of the current winter storm is not the snowfall, but the bitter cold temperatures and wind that will make today and Friday very dangerous to be outside. The featured graph shows the percentage of years in Ames's climate history that a certain threshold low temperature was exceeded. According to this plot, Ames has seen a sub -20 °F temperature in 40% of years during the Dec, Jan, and Feb months. Lows on Saturday are only expected to reach -10 °F, which is common just about every year.

Take ~4 inches of new fluffy snow, add in below zero temperatures, stir in 20+ mph wind gusts and you have very dangerous weather conditions to be outside. The featured image is of air temps and wind from the NAM model for midnight tonight showing brutal conditions. The next good chance of snow arrives on Sunday already! NEXRAD composite shows a rather larger area of snowfall impacting Northern Iowa this Monday morning with temperatures in the single digits and teens. A weak storm system is expected on Tuesday night before the arrival of the next airmass direct from Canada. The good news is that temperatures are expected to warm into this coming weekend with highs above freezing!

The featured chart maps the performance of Ames high temperatures with the Dow Jones Industrials index since 1 Nov 2007. Both have been on the downward trend dropping ~10% during the period. Of course, this comparison is not related as one is related to the sub-prime housing collapse and the other is related to a bitter winter, but both trends do cause a great deal of misery to Iowans! With the stock market set to tank today, temperatures are expected in the teens with perhaps one more really cold night this week before a warm up in time for the weekend. Perhaps the stock market will recover by then as well!

| Date : 28 Jan 07:04 AM
| Votes : Good: 24 Bad: 3
+----------------------------------------------
It was only a few days ago that portions of Iowa experienced record cold low temperatures. Today, Southeast Iowa has a good chance at beating record high temperatures for this date in the lower 60s. This record warm up is thanks to a developing weather system to our west that will help to strengthen strong southerly winds today and bring chances of rain and then snow. Unfortunately, colder air is set to return tomorrow with highs back below normal.
